Great news! After Lord of the Rings, The Matrix and even Aliens, John Williams' score to the first Harry Potter-film will get the live symphony-treatment. The premier of it will be in my hometown Rotterdam on november 2, 3 and 4 of this year. Of course, this is amazing news. I love these live performances; they have the film scores shine as the should. More info in Dutch and English here: https://www.rotterdamsphilharmonisch.nl/harrypotter Thanks for the head's up! Immediately bought tickets for me and my girlfriend.

I'm jealous of anyone who gets to go; So far, it hasn't come anywhere near New England.

Hopefully Jurassic Park, ID4, Aliens and Batman will also find their way to Rotterdam.

I saw this yesterday with the Pilsen Radio Symphony Orchestra. What can I say? The orchestra was great, very, very precise in their performance (only at the very end during the credits on of the sections strayed away a little bit). Especially the brass sections were performing without any faults, even through the highly complex and demanding finale. The film's soundtrack was mixed at a good level, and the film was also subtitled so that there was no reason to turn up the soundtrack during the louder sequences. Conductor John Jesensky kept the orchestra right on time all the time, which is no small feat considering the length of many of the pieces. Hats off to that, and the standing ovations at the end were greatly deserved by all of them. Seeing such a monumental score performed live to picture was quite an experience. Still, it also demonstrated the benefits of a film music concert consisting of film music suites and without any accompaniment by a projected film. There's a fair bit of underscore in Harry Potter (which is one of my favorite compositions of film music, but still...), and a more condensed presentation of the music might be even more enjoyable purely on musical terms. Nevertheless, as a performance of film music to picture, this was an impressive and exhilarating experience.
