The "BEWITCHED on DVD" thread has raised the issue of that indelible old Screen Gems logo after the end credits. I was surprised at how much it meant to some of us.

One of my 1970s memories is the "United Artists, A Transamerica Company" logo at the start of a James Bond movie at the show. That's something I would have enjoyed seeing on the DVDs, but it isn't true anymore so they replaced it.

I also liked the United Artists logo that went with ROCKY III, the one where the letters UA turn slowly toward the screen as a dark and momentous theme (by Joe Harnell) rises to a crescendo. That music is on CD, btw.

It's the story of the DVD era. Our old memories keep getting revised.

In a similar vein, a movie might have a studio's logo "built-in" at the front end, yet the DVD makers feel the need to add another copy of the very same logo animation before the movie begins. I think it's legal boilerplate: every DVD will have this, that and the other thing, even if it is redundantly repetitive.

To some, the original studio's tag has become part of the show. The new owner of the property naturally does not want to endorse the original publisher—assuming they still exist.

The Lost In Space Blu-ray collection went so far as to keep the original ads on several of the episodes. What will the nostalgia market offer us next—trips in an actual time machine?

This reveals that at least part of what we want from home video is to recapture the time when a show first became familiar. Ideally, I'd want the DVD to match my memories.

This didn't start with DVD, of course. There are examples even from VHS and its contemporary formats.

VHS indeed - the most pointless example has to be Orion Home Video's insistence on editing the video division's logo onto the movie itself.

The "BEWITCHED on DVD" thread has raised the issue of that indelible old Screen Gems logo after the end credits. I was surprised at how much it meant to some of us.

For me, it's a huge part of watching the program. When I grew up watching Jeannie, the Screen Gems logo was something that I really enjoyed and associated with the program. We always watched the end credits to the very finish. When Sony put out the DVDs, I was unhappy with the Sonly logo in place of SG. When I got my hands on some copies of episodes from 16mm film, I was thrilled to see the SG logo at the end again. It immediately took me back to those more carefree times. When I read the Mill Creek Jeannie's had the SG logo reinstated, I rushed rightout and bought the set. It makes all the difference. I don't care that the Sony logo is after the SG logo (Screen Gems is part of Sony anyway, which is probably why they were okay with putting it back), just as long as the so-called "S From Hell" is back where it belongs.

Having the 1960's 20th Century Fox logo at the end of Lost in Space again is exactly the same. On my Columbia House VHS copy of the Star Trek episode "The Omega Glory," they have the 1968 Paramount logo with Desilu music. It's the ONLY time that logo was included on any home video release of any episode (although I believe it may have been on some Sci-Fi Channel airings). I was thrilled to see it. It's only on the second season episodes in 1968.

In the third season, it changed to the Paramount logo seen on the VHS releases.

End credit studio logos are a part of the experience for me. They bring back so many good memories associated with each series, movie or special. Christmastime as a kid meant Rankin-Bass specials and their logos make me EXTREMELY sentimental.

Hell, I wish my Space:1999 episodes still had the original ITC logo on the DVDs and blu-rays...

Nowadays, when you can't even read the end credits, there are no opening themes and logo's are just quick snips, it's hard to appreciate these things if you didn't grow up with them. But for me, I miss elaborate opening credits, "brought to you by" bumpers with musical themes, long end credits and production logs with music and/or animation. When I see a classic show on DVD, I always hope to see those network and production company bits restored. Some have. Most don't. Here are some I pulled off of 16mm copies of a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea episode and put on my You Tube channel:

I'm always shocked how Star Trek, one of the most popular TV series in history, has not had a "network night of broadcast" style release on any medium. It deserves The Twilight Zone treatment.

Zap, ol' buddy, thanks for starting this thread.

I always liked the Four Star Productions logo at the end of "The Rifleman." It went through a number of iterations over the years, but the one with the voice-over is my favorite.

Anything for a pal! big grin

I'm at work where the company firewall blocks video (and a lot of other things-- I'm surprised they don't block Bewitched fan sites for touching on the occult), so I'll have to check out all these youtube postings at home later.

I don't know if this counts or not, but:

"THX 1138" - The American Zoetrope logo was different in the theater than it was for the DVD and Blu-Ray releases for its 2004 Director's Cut, even though the theatrical and Home Video releases were only a *very* short time apart.

I know that's the one that I was thinking of. I would guess that goes for Zap also, since I'm convinced we're somehow related.... razz

BIG pet peeve of mine when the studio logo for an older movie is changed to the "modern" version on the most recent home video release. mad It pleased me immensely when I got Blow Out on the Criterion Blu-Ray, and it restored the awesomely 80's Filmways Pictures logo at the beginning. big grin

Warner Bros. is probably the biggest offender.

Yes. smile The Joe Harnell-scored UA logo is the exact one I like so much. And of course I like seeing Screen Gems, and Star Trek's Paramount logos.

But the one that most transports me to "Another Time, Another Place" is the ITC animation with it's distinctive music (Barry Gray?). There I am, watching a 19-inch color(!) TV that seems huge to me, and thrilled with the performance of our new roof antenna pulling in stations so well. The ITC logo on Space: 1999 helped drive home the point that this show was an exotic import; it didn't look like a domestic studio logo at all. Good times!

So many films are now not owned by the studio that made them, I have some United Artists films on Blu-ray that start off with the 20th Century Fox logo, followed by the MGM logo, followed by the United Artists logo. I read a (very positive) review on the new Universal restoration of One-Eyed Jacks, & it seems the opening Paramount logo has been replaced by the Universal logo.

And they ran it at the start and finish of each show. Funny how most people probably connect it to The Muppet Show, but you and I will always connect it to 1999.

A couple oldies but goodies that were part of the 70s rerun watching experience.

The Viacom logo haunts my dreams. I used to spend hours on YouTube looking up logos.

I have a problem...
