Another reminder that those names familiar to us in movie and album credits have actual people behind them...

The article didn't mention how old he was... I'm assuming he had to be in his 80s, considering how far back he was working. Anyone know how old he was?

Good Afternoon to the FSM Family

My name is Darrell Hall, and I had the pleasure of being Ken's son. I just wanted to thank all of for the kind thoughts and prayers. My dad lived quite a incredible life, and was very fortunate to have worked with literally the finest composers in the world. I'm sure most of you might know who they were, starting with JG.

I thought i would share some of the stories that i find astonishing. When he first started at Fox in the 50's, one of his bosses was Lionel Newman. Lionel right away, had an affection for my dad and started calling Prince Valiant. Lionel back in the day was like a god on the fox lot, so when he asked of something, you dropped everything and did what he asked. Well for my dad things were a little bit different. Most of the things Lionel asked were ..... Hey Kid drop what your doing .... were going to the track. Lionel loved to bet on the horses and my dad was always his side kick on those outings. He also would say "Hey prince" Come on were going to Vegas. Dad would of course always readily drop what he was doing and off they went. This is also where he met both Jerry and John Williams.
Pretty cool !

I was fortunate enough to work my father on multiple projects and even went to London with he and Jerry on a few films. Jerry was my dad's best friend all the way up to JG's passing. They had a bond like no other editor / composer. Spending the better part of 3 decades together, but it was more than a working relationship, they were like brothers ! After JG's passing, my father really didn't know what he wanted to do, but after a timely phone call from an industry legend, that all changed. USC was calling, and Kenny was reborn.

I didn't realize it until after his untimely death, but the USC years were maybe some of his most important work years of his life. He single handedly changed the atmosphere there by bringing schools that were previously on their own Islands together and creating classes that transcended everything that the film / music schools had done in the past, and changed the culture and curriculum of both the music and cinema departments. There are now classes that connect the 2 schools. I can go into more detail about this dow the road if anyone is interested.

When we found out the cancer was going to win. My dad wanted any and everyone to come see him. Well the word got out quite quickly, even to the students. Some upon hearing the news dropped everything and drove down from above San Francisco to see him. At 1 point there was 30 people in and around his room. As the crowd grew, a woman next door who's mother was also in hospice poked out the door and asked. Is that someone famous ? WoW ! He was one of those people that was so supportive and inspirational that you could not help but smile when you saw him. Sometime in life you don't; realize the impact of your friend, family memeber had on his peers and students ...I do now !

I'll try to check in here periodically an answer questions anyone might have .... about anything really.

There is going to be an enormous celebration of his life at USC, most likely in November. If anyone on here would lie to attend this celebration, please PM me and I'll make sure you are on this list !

Take CARE FSM family, and than you again for this thread.
Darrell Hall

He was always a kid at heart all the way until the end. I think that's partly why the kids at USC loved him so much.

One of dad's quotes ....

"Never allow anything to stifle creativity"

I'm curious about his work as music editor on Miracle Mile, scored by Tangerine Dream in 1988.

Thank you Darrell for sharing such wonderful memories of your Dad! Your Father's work as I said was exemplary and will always be remembered and so appreciated. I'm so glad he had a great following in his teaching life and that so many students were fortunate to have known him and learned from him.

Peace and comfort to you and your family sir!

I spoke to my mom about this, we are both drawing blanks. I think this might have been a film that Jerry was commissioned on, but later walked away from. My father probably stayed aboard until Jerry signed on another film, which usually happens fairly quickly. Thank you so much for inquiring, wish i had more information for ya.

I follow Tangerine Dream closely, and I have never heard that Goldsmith was commisioned to score Miracle Mile.

Seems like your father worked on the odd non-JG project, like Stick, scored by Joseph Conlan and Barry De Vorzon in 1985.
