I saw the restored print of this in theater this past year and it was magnificent. I was particularly struck by Lavagnino's music, which might be one of his most powerful scores and one of the best Shakespeare scores ever written, like the film lost for many years...until now. If you don't know the film I highly recommend you pick up the recent Criterion release of it and give the incredibly powerful score a listen.

I hope that the recording of this survives somewhere so that it can be released. I'm guessing it would be too much to hope for a brand new recording of this Lavagnino masterwork, but if the Walton Shakespeare scores deserve fresh recordings so does this.

You can sample some of the original music because it's included in the trailer here (and what an excellent older trailer, to boot!)

There is a nice CAM CD with the soundtrack:

Hi Yavar, yes it is a superb score, and as Slint has stated it has been released by CAM on cd:

http://www.soundtrackcollector.com/title/7866/Falstaff

I believe it is still available at various sites.

I've owned the UK LP of it for many years, not got the cd so would be interested to hear what the sound quality is like compared to the LP, can anyone comment on that please?

Cheers Dave

I seem to remember that the quality is quite good. While CAM CDs were produced some times ago (early 90s), the sound is usually quite similar or identical when they are expanded on Digitmovies or Beat. However, there is certainly a chance that it will be expanded with some alternate takes at some point in the future, like most other CAM CDs.

I had no idea it'd been released and assumed it'd suffered the same fate as the film. I would be all over a new edition but I'll probably just seek out an original. I'm shocked that this amazing Shakespeare score has never been discussed on this forum, frankly, but I googled searched the forum archives and that appears to be the case...

If you look closely at the lower right corner of that FALSTAFF CD cover, you'll see that it's marked as being released in Dolby Surround.

Not really true if you look here for example:

Hi, Yavar.

If you are still interested in the C.A.M. CD on Lavagnino's Falstaff, then you may wish to know that a used CD has appeared within Dusty Groove.

https://www.dustygroove.com/item/818264?sf=lavagnino&incl_oos=1&incl_cs=1&kwfilter=lavagnino

Items in DG's inventory on Italian soundtracks don't linger for a long time, though.
There's currently more used CDs of Lavagnino soundtracks than Falstaff, too (more than 1 Western and an OOP WWII title as well).

Thanks Zardoz, I actually did get a copy as a present already. I hope someone else picks this up as it's really a great score (to a great film -- get the Criterion everyone!)

The film is amazing. I haven't seen the Criterion transfer yet, but I saw the restoration prints earlier this year at the Film Forum and this very powerful movie looked absolutely outstanding.

I'll admit I haven't bought the Criterion yet either (budget!) but like you I saw the new restoration in theater this past year and it was an incredible experience. The amazing score by Lavagnino thundering in theater was Doyle's Henry V level awesome.

Thanks Yavar for posting this. I had no idea this fine score was ever issued on CD and have just located a sealed copy from Discogs.

There is a lot of influence on Branagh's Henry V from this film. If you liked that picture, you'll probably like this one as well.

Get the score if you can, but definitely see the film. It is now my favorite cinematic Shakespeare adaptation.
