Good use of Theodore Shapiro's The Invitation in the trailer. James McAvoy looks interesting at the very least. James Newton Howard hasn't been officially announced, but is it a given? This one will definitely have a score, unlike The Visit, but is it possible Night chooses someone else?

I want those two minutes and thirty seconds of my life back. I can't believe anybody is still offering him money to make films. He hasn't made a good movie in over ten years and this trailer showcases all the ear marks of the same old stuff, different actors.

I thought The Visit was a hoot (in a good way).
I hope JNH returns, as some (most?) of his best work has been with Night.
Failing that, I hope Edmund Choi returns.

This looks so lame it's not even funny... wondering what convinced McAvoy to take on this piece of trash... perhaps he lost a bet or something...

THE VISIT was an excellent movie -- so lo fi and low budget that it seemed to recapture some of Shyamalan's former glory. If this new film follows a similar recipe, I have high hopes for it (whether JNH scores it or not).

The Visit was surprisingly good, the kids were annoying as hell ( instead of endearing or cool or funny, just f*cking annoying ) , but it was a well made, fun little thriller. This one, I'm not 100% sold by the trailer, but I'm also not one of those people just waiting for the movie to tank and automatically suck. My hope is that Shyamalan will find his mojo again.

M. Night Shyamalan is way underrated as a director. It seems after his big success with THE 6th SENSE everybody started to try to guess his gimmick twist endings in advance without paying attention to how well crafted he gets there.

Sure, he did some stuff that wasn't really very good, like LADY IN THE WATER and AFTER EARTH (the latter being well directed but with a lousy script; no director could have saved that), but at least he goes out of his way to tell some stories not already told. In a cinematic landscape where we get mostly franchise pictures, that counts for something.

I've got THE VISIT on BluRay; have so far only seen the trailer, but it sure looks like a promising return to form.

Yes, Shyamalan is hugely underrated. Even in his "turkeys" (like THE HAPPENING, THE LAST AIRBENDER or AFTER EARTH), there are layers upon layers of visual details that may not be visible beyond the occasionally silly script or other hokey elements. But I am particularly fond of the "re-juvenation" of his style that seemed to happen on THE VISIT; I hope it's a sign (no pun intended) of more good things to come, including this SPLIT thing -- which looks very weird, but also very tantalizing.

Shyamalan seems to work best with material written by other people. When he writes his own scripts, he can get pretentious. (Like having himself play a writer in LADY IN THE WATER, who's supposedly going to be martyred and famous, or something like that.... WTF?)

Meanwhile, SPLIT at least looks claustrophobic, with a nice chance for McEvoy to show his acting chops. Might be fun.

I saw Shyamalan as a guest at a concert JNH conducted of his music this past March. There was no mention of any further projects.

He worked with Charlie Clouser on the Wayward Pines episode he directed. Maybe he will score Split?

Thor, I totally agree. I think M. Night is an incredibly talented director who was somewhat a victim of his own success, and his name unfortunately became linked to the notion of having a BIG TWIST in a film. I really hope that he can re-establish himself with some good films. But it is funny to me how in today's world he's pretty much written off as a one-note director who got lucky with a good film, and now his name is just synonymous with 'trash'.

I do hope that he and JNH can continue collaborating... they are two talented people whose work improves together.

Well that's disappointing news.

I know they're still friendly. I attended a concert last March in Miami, with JNH conducting his music, and Shyamalan made an appearance onstage to express his appreciation for the music, then returned to his place in the audience. Great evening! JNH conducted a few Shyamalan pieces, as well as many others.

I was there as well. I've spoken with Night and spent time with him several times in the past, and James is always someone he speaks highly of. I think it's more of a budget/money thing. SPLIT was well received at Fantastic Fest. It's a shame James isn't a part of what might be the best Shyamalan film since Signs.

"I think it's more of a budget/money thing"
----------------------
It must be all about the KERRRCCCHHHIIINNNNGGGG!!! (his words after landing the Hunger Games gigs) with JNH.
Surely he knows it's low-budget and could wave his fee or use keyboards/samples (he started out with synth scores) if he wanted to do a favour for a friend.
Basil famously scored IT'S MY PARTY for his good mate Randal Kleiser for $1 and Horner took SOUTHPAW for less than normal pay and even threw in a free score for MAG 7 wink

Actually, Shyamalan's film last year, THE VISIT, was really good and a true return to form. It seems like he's getting a new "awakening" in low-budget, indie genre films.

Anyone listened to this yet? How does it rank among scores to MNS films?

It's quite terrible synth sound design... couldn't bare it longer than a few minutes...
By far the worst score from a MNS movie.
