The first edition comes in a standard (2 CD) jewelcase (pictured below), and the second comes in slightly larger softer plastic case (which doesn't protect the inserts very well. I have no idea which is best sound quality wise, but I suspect that it would be the second. UFO - music by Barry GRAY Incidentally, I'm looking for a (truly) mint copy of the first edition. Anyone care to sell me theirs? 100$ US offered. Thanks kvns93674 AT gmail DOT com

why do you want the first edition instead of the big one ? I already own the "big" one. I'm on track, a long and slow track, to fill in the gaps in my Fanderson collection. Still looking for "Sleeping Astronauts" and "International Concerto" as well.

I doubt it as the second edition is fairly recent, but then who knows. Of course, I'd certainly be in favour if for no other reason than making this great music available to fans. As for the second edition being better, I really couldn't say, except that the booklet is more comprehensive.

There's no particular difference in sound quality between them.

The later 40th Anniversary reissue does include additional (tracked) music from previous Gerry Anderson shows; however, Barry Gray’s unused cues on the previous release have been omitted to make room for these.

The track lists of the two editions (and the differences) can be found here: http://tvsoundtracks.blogspot.ca/2009/10/ufo-alerte-dans-lespace-12102009.html There’s actually even MORE music missing than this. There are sections of music WITHIN nearly all of the scores that were ultimately unused in the final episodes. Sometimes these bits were replaced with music from earlier Gerry Anderson shows. In other words, the first Fanderson release presents the full unedited scores as Barry Gray intended, including music that wasn’t used. The second Fanderson release presents the edited scores as they appear in the final episodes, without the unused music and including tracked music from other Anderson shows like Thunderbirds, Stingray, Doppelganger and The Secret Service. You can’t spot the differences just from reading the track listings. You have to compare the two versions on a computer. I started doing this and gave up after a while - I’m a huge fan of this music but the task requires patience and determination of Herculean proportions.

However, I don't believe I would need a computer to differentiate the various tracks.
