Someone called me from a cellphone number that I didn't recognise.... does anyone on here know of a website that will give you the name of the person for FREE?
Well, you can go to Google and enter the number with area code and there are sites that let you kinow if it is spam. But use my method for better results:
Don't answer the phone to no-numbers or numbers you don't recognize. If it's important and a real person, they'll call back. Similarly, don't identify yourself or give your number in your voicemail. If they know you, they know you're number and who you are.
I have a land line and a night job. The most important thing I do is turn the ringer off before I go to bed in the morning. When I get up, there is usually a message or two caused by scam-bots that came to my number as they dialed thru the phone book. And that crap would have woken me up when I need to sleep for work.

One of the big advantages of cell phones is that there are no readily available phone directories for scammers and spammers to use. Some manage to get your number anyway, but nowhere near the number that can access your landline. You can usually get some general location information on the caller from the Reverse Phone directory.
In my role as a fraud investigator, I lecture a little bit on Open Source Intelligence - basically a fancy name for using the Internet as an investigation tool. As a result I have a few cool tips and here is one of them;
Try looking up a cellphone number in Facebook. If someone has registered their number when they created their Facebook page, it will take you to their profile.
If you type a ph# into google it will come back as a known number that you have to pay someone to see any more info about, or you will get websites that document sales calls.
If the caller didn't leave a message it was most likely an uncompleted sales call.
There is also a service called nomorobo.com. It will intercept sales and robo calls after one ring and let legit calls though. It works on land lines and many wireless carriers. You can even engage the service on others behalf by directing the confirmation email to your own email address. There is also the federal Do Not Call Registry. www.donotcall.gov It has many loopholes, but is extra protection.
