With the remake of BEN-HUR coming out it got me wondering why didn't the filmmakers just use Rozsa's original score? This remake is going to be tough to watch without hearing in our heads the iconic Rozsa score.
Question: Has a remake ever used the score from the original film? All I can come up with is Peter Jackson's KING KONG remake which did have Steiner bits played in the film. Any other examples of a remake using original score?
I think Jurassic World qualifies at least as much as The Force Awakens. And speaking of J.J. Abrams, each film in his rebooted Star Trek series has featured Alexander Courage's fanfare from the original TV series.
Craig Armstrong's "Incredible Hulk" featured one statement of the theme from the TV series of the same name. Similarly, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy film used the opening theme from the BBC TV series in one scene.
Someone said in another thread that the end credits for the soon to be released Magnificent Seven remake feature Bernstein's old theme.
A remake of "The Four Feathers", they hired Buxton Orr to do a score that adapted Rozsa's original score. The score was rejected and Benjamin Frankel did a new one, though he didn't adapt. But the final film used score from the original film.
I think it needs to be pointed out that there's a difference between using one or more themes from the original (which is a very common thing) vs. using entire scores all over again, re-recorded or not. I believe it's the latter the topic starter asked for.
