Very sad news. I have always been a great admirer of his work. He's a truly fine composer. Rest in peace, Einojuhani Rautavaara.

Sad to hear this. I love and have numerous works of his, my favourites being his Flute Concerto, the wonderful choral, orchestral On The Last Frontier and the eerie and mysterious Cantus Articus.

Sad news as he was my favourite Finnish composer. His concertos are my favourites; the mentioned Cantus Arcticus and Angel of Dusk (Double bass concerto) to name a few. He also has composed some excellent choral pieces. He certainly had a recognizable style, "weird" sounding harmonies that somehow made sense.

Sad news, thanks for sharing. "Concerto for Birds and Orchestra" is absolutely spellbinding. Check it out if you haven't already.

I love his Cantus Arcticus.

There are certain bits from Shaiman's MISERY that sound like Cantus Articus. At least that's always been my impression.

A huge loss for classical music, to be sure.

I would never list Sibelius or Rautavaara as "greatest" composers! Good, yes, but great, NO!

Did he ever do any original film scores?

Did he ever do any original film scores?

He didn't. A Finnish movie database site only mentions 2 filmed versions of his operas and a short documentary with "The Bog" from Cantus Arcticus and one Swedish film from 1979 with a piece called "Pelimannit".
