Jack Davis, the comic book artist who first gained fame for his work at E.C. Comics for the horror titles and went on to become a prolific cover artist for his work on album and magazine covers (most notably T.V. Guide) has died. Remembrances?
I was the right age in the 50's when Jack Davis joined with the "usual gang of idiots" to create the wonderful artwork for "MAD" comics/magazine and the other great EC artwork. There was never a problem in identifying his artwork. In later years he aso created much artwork the LP record covers which I have been collecting for years now also ( See attachment at http://www.endlessgroove.com/issue5/jdintro.htm ). Godspeed Jack.
In 1960, I was 8 years old, and even then I knew I wanted to be a cartoonist. Jack Davis was one of my greatest inspirations! It's hard to believe that I'm 63 years old now, and he has passed. I DID become a cartoonist (among other things), but my work was never so fresh, inventive and hilarious as Jack's. He was a hard act to follow.
Rest In Peace, Jack...and thanks for inspiring this wannabe.
Rest in peace. I read Mad magazine for years, and Jack Davis was easily one of my favorite artists. Whether it was movie/tv parodies or other features I was always amazed with the amount of emotion he could express in the characters he drew with just a few lines. Here was a story I remember from 1981 that cracks me up to this day.
His ability to illustrate the various frustrations of the characters is amazing. I still think of the panel featuring the multi-screen anytime I am in a movie theater and can hear another movie playing. When the next movie over is so loud it distracts even the characters . . .
