1. Take Uber or Lyft
2. Get there at 5 for Happy Hour (half-priced drinks)
3. Skip the light and medium drinks and go straight for the strong.
4. Skip the mai-tai. It was not very good the last few times I was there.
5. Be sure to check out the gardens at some point - if you can still walk.

1. My wife is a teetotaler, so the designated driver is set. She drinks the Island Queen Colada on the rocks. smile
2. Way ahead of you, old sport. Appetizers are also half off.
3. I got the (not strong) Mara Amu the first time because I wanted the tiki mug. It's been strong drinks after that, particularly rum barrels.
4. This is helpful advice, as I was going to give it a try even if the only people I had seen drinking Mai-Tais were the elderly.
5. Way ahead of you, Old Sport--legs are usually numb after two Barrels o' Rum. Sounds like a sea shanty...

Appetizers are also half off.

Also: If you ever want to go for dinner and skip the show, make a reservation on the patio, and entrees are BOGO.

Is this your first time going? I seem to remember you saying that you'd never been there, and that August would be your first time? Apologies if I was providing unsolicited advice for the initiated. wink

Yeah, I've been three times since 2014, which is shocking in that 2014 was my first time there--I was born and raised in South Florida so I should have gone decades ago (cheap parents and grandparents denied me in childhood, though we did look around the front before they opened once).

We skipped the show and ate on the patio area, near the gardens; loved it. I did have a poorly-blended and in-need-of-ice Zombie, though. It isn't my favorite drink despite its grand reputation; I much prefer the smooth simplicity (complexity?) of The Barrel. Any ofther of the strong drinks that you can recommend? I'm going back for my birthday next month. This time I will see the show again, which I really liked the last time out.

Have you been recently? The gift shop is vastly improved since my first visit two years ago.

I'm sure our UK and European friends here won't mind the advice in this thread.

Favorite drinks include the Zombie, Black Magic, Jet Pilot, Rum Barrel, probably others that I can't think of.

The last time I was there, I went four nights in a row, saved my receipts from previous nights, and drank one of every strong drink on the menu. I generally liked all of them to varying degrees. The mai-tai was the only major disappointment; it tasted nothing like the classic Trader Vic's or Don the Beachcomber's recipes (which I will post soon in the rum thread). I wonder if the fact that the mai-tai has become such an abomination in recent decades has made them change the recipe to reflect contemporary expectations.

The gift shop was amazing in the early 2000s. In general, it has not been as good since then, but you can still find cool stuff every now and then.

I've never tried their Mai-Tai, but as you probably know, it is popular among the senior citizen-aged Mai-Kai customers. I admre that those people still consume alcohol at this late date and it's probably nostalgic for them, too--like Harvey Wallbangers must be for aging Baby Boomers. wink

Always good service from the swell girls when I go. Last time there was a swellegant dame named Darriana or somesuch; she had a dry sense of humor and answered all our questions while demnstrating fine knowledge of the drinks and appetizers menu.

I haven't run into that lady vocalist who I read about over at Tikiroom.com who, to put it politely, is quite the "acquired" taste. I like the quiet, relative solitude of the Molokai bar so when the erstwhile Yma Sumac is absent, I am truly in paradise.

Had a Jet Pilot cocktail this past December, and wasn't impressed. Maybe it was me (quite possible), but the drink itself tasted bitter. I may give it another chance, though. I had the same experience with a (under-iced and warm in spots) Zombie, but have never gone wrong with the anti-hipster Barrel o' Rum. I'll be heading back to the Mai Kai this Valentine's Day, and plan on trying the Black Magic. If not, then it's back to the ol' Barrel.

LOVE the Mai Kai chicken wings! No need for the (excellent) trio of sauces, either.

Next Mai-Kai visit will be on Valentine's Day. The wife had co-opted all my favorite appetizers, so I'll try and forge some new favorites.

I'll be the guy dispensing Hemingwayesque advice to myself while trying the Black Magic for the first time. wink

There's a hilarious passage in Beach Bum's "Potions of the Caribbean" in which the Bum instructs us that that alcoholics mix lousy cocktails: They just want to get slammed and ignore the nuances of flavor profiles and combinations.

Anyway, the Hemingway daiquiri was created by the daiquiri's inventor - specifically so Hemingway could get slammed. The mixologist would refuse to serve it to anyone else, because it was awful.

So you if you ever go to a bar that serves Hemingway daiquiris, get out of there.

When I saw how--via some YouTube video--the barmaid at Sloppy Joe's in Key West made the Papa Doble--canned grapefruit juice and maraschino cherry juice, I ran screaming from the computer, so your advice has merit.

I'll keep the drink discussion in this thread focused on what the Mai-Kai offers (unless the Stalinists lock this thread, too). wink

I highly recommend Natalie's not-from-concentrate pink grapefrulit juice for cocktails. It tastes like fresh squeezed. Also, Ba Da Bing makes great maraschino cherries that are corn-syrup-free. I pour a little bit into old fashioneds after muddling the orange, cherries, bitters, and demerara sugar.

Sorry to take the thread off-topic.

Mr. Phelps, we are planning our annual pilgrimage to the Mai Kai for later this year. I wonder if there is any possibility that we could hook up. Do you prefer to remain anonymous? If so, I understand. Alternately, I can just let you know which nights we will be there, and then scan the Molokai bar for the handsome guy in the profile pic.

That would be delightful. Just got your email... smile

As for taking this thread off topic, I think it's just we modernists here. wink

I thought Mai kai was that game where they sling the ball off the wall in miami vice? Or was she an oriental assassin from some Fu Manchu film?! smile

The Mai Kai is the last remaining of the grand, post-war Polynesian palaces, with decor, a stage show, gardens, and more-or-less authentic drink recipes dating from the Trader Vic's and Don the Beachcomber era. I believe it is now on the historic register. It simply must be experienced to be believed.

I almost just typed "beachcombover." I think I am going to open a tiki bar called "Don the Beachcombover."

You're thinking of May Britt, the one-time wife of American entertainer Sammy Davis, Jr. (look him up, Millennials).

With the recent 86 degrees Fahrenheit (about 28 Celsius) here near Miami these past couple of days, I sure am getting into a Mai-Kai mood. Luckily, my Mrs. and I will be there this Valentine's Day.

I will do my best to behave there--at least better than James Ellroy and/or Batman when he rescues Martha Wayne from thugs.

Looking forward to trying the Black Magic as well as those delightful appetizers.

Instead of the Black Magic I got the Mutiny--three of them. Delightful. Will try the Planter's Punch next time.
