FRIDAY, JULY 15

ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY---new video, poster and photos were released.

Video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUb_zpdyDpU

KONG: SKULL ISLAND---director Jordan Vogt-Roberts commented on King Kong's size in this prequel movie, “From the size of the skull, you can tell that things on this island are much bigger than audiences are used to with traditional Kong lore. Our Kong is by far the biggest Kong that you’ve seen on screen, and that translates to a lot of different things on the island. Peter Jackson’s Kong was around 25 feet. The ‘33 Kong ranged between 25 feet and 50 feet, I want to say he was 50-plus feet when he was on the Empire State Building. He varied in size dramatically! The ’70s Kong was somewhere between them. The thing that most interested me was, how big do you need to make [Kong], so that when someone lands on this island and doesn’t believe in the idea of myth, the idea of wonder – when we live in a world of social and civil unrest, and everything is crumbling around us, and technology and facts are taking over – how big does this creature need to be, so that when you stand on the ground and you look up at it, the only thing that can go through your mind is: ‘That’s a god.’”
Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson and John Goodman star.

WONDER WOMAN---new photos released show from the movie show Gal Gadot and Chris Pine.

SHERLOCK---BBC One released the first official photo for Season 4.

THE BEGUILED---Colin Farrell is in talks to star in the Sofia Coppola remake of the 1971 Clint Eastwood movie.

FIRST KILL---Bruce Willis stars in this movie about a police chief who must rescue a boy being held hostage by a bank robber who wants the key to the locker that contains the heist loot.

MY FRIEND DAHMER---Ross Lynch stars in this movie based on the graphic novel about serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.

PLUTONIA---movie underway based on the comic book about kids who find the body of a dead superhero.

CATASTROPHE---Amazon renewed the series for two more seasons.

CASTLE HANGNAIL---movie underway based on the children's book.

Again Star Wars is bad science fiction. If the Death Star got as close to a planet as it seems in that poster, and it had greater mass, as would be needed to fire its death ray, it would suck the atmosphere off that world and cause floods and earthquakes.

Nice poster though.

I can help out with a cropped montage of those great Wonder Woman photos:

Star Wars is space opera. There isn't really any "science" in those stories. It's all about the conflict and the build-up to the conflict. The Starkiller in The Force Awakens was beyond outlandish. That thing fellated a sun, then it blew its load and everyone stood on the surface of the planet and watched it happen without any radiation shielding whatsoever. (They should've taken advantage of the moment and had the popcorn kernels ready.) THEN the death-beam blew up an entire group of planets with pinpoint accuracy...AFTER it fragmented into multiple streams.

Say, the rebels never noticed them building that thing? They're able to cruise from one corner of the galaxy to the other the way we take Route 66. (Did the nu-Empire get a bunch of credit for that aftermarket ore over at Andromeda Waste & Recycling?) Time dilation? WTF is that? big grin

"Science fiction"? The second word, sure. big grin

... Unless you concede that 'anti-gravity field' tech of some sort exists in the Star Wars universe (not a stretch!), which then obliterates your concern...

Regardless if it's science fiction or fantasy it has to look plausible or at least suspend my disbelief. That poster is ridiculous. Creators today have no sense of moderation. Imagery is over the top. Case in point, supersize King Kong!

Dragon's got one too many slashes in the URL (none are needed).

Yeah, that's ridiculous. But it's just a poster, and posters must provoke interest.

The Death Star is that close to planet, in the same way that Jake Lloyd really created Darth Vader's shadow on his hovel in The Phantom Menace:

A poster is an advertisement and a design, not a piece of scientifically accurate literature.

In fact, the poster looks like a (slight) design nod to the original Star Wars theatrical poster, featuring X-wings flying at Darth Vader's enormous translucent dome.

The Star Wars poster was a rush job AFTER the film hit the theaters. The Hildebrandt brothers worked around the clock and had to deliver a painting in 48hrs.

The Rouge One poster has no focal point or subject. The top two thirds is an over sized faded Death Star and blue sky. The soldiers on the bottom are too tiny, and the over all design is flat and isn't dramatic.

While this image below is more Empire centric than Rebel centric, is has a focal point, a subject and dramatic layout.

I agree that the new Rogue One poster is pretty uninteresting. I just didn't understand the criticism of the science of it :-p

I always loved the Hildebrandt poster. It captured the adventure of the whole thing. (And the Vader mask isn't supposed to be hanging there literally, but an overbearing image.)

After all the work and sweat the Hildebrandts put into it, it was only actually used for about 3 days, whereupon Fox came up with a different, more monochromatic image. But the Hildebrandt poster is the one everyone saw when the movie first opened, and achieved a kind of cult status.

So we're all supposed to be anti-science if it gets in the way of fantasy? Oy vey!

You know as much as I talk about Sci-Fi movies and TV here, I actually watch very little of it except the older stuff that I've liked for decades.

Most Science Fiction movies and shows are ridiculous junk. They actually offend my intelligence -- such as it is.

Well most movies and shows are junk. I do think science fiction and fantasy are essential for a forward thinking society. One that stimulates creativity and imagination. I know a lot of scientists who are huge Star Trek and Star Wars fans. I don't know many that are WWF or NASCAR fans.

Eh, who said it was final art or even official art? Anyway no more fake than the official poster.
Edit: All Photoshop art looks "Photoshopped".
