In a 1974 interview with his biographer Pier Marco De Santi Rota explained that the complete musical framework for his later ROMEO AND JULIET film score had already been set up in that 1960 stage music. So it is obvious that most of the themes had already been composed for that stage production in 1960: "Credo che la colonna sonora più riuscita da me composta per Zeffirelli sia questa di "Romeo e Giulietta". La sua ossatura è fondamentalmente quella delle musiche di scena che ho scritto per la tragedia shakespeariana, rappresentata nel 1960 all'Old Vic di London, con la regia dello stesso Zeffirelli".
