I'm convinced at this point that CDpot is a drug front that happens to benefit people who still buy music. The store is like a warehouse that's constantly filled with CDs and records overflowing out of their bins (when they aren't piled up in boxes blocking the aisles). I usually shop for records at this point, but the prices on that front are always well below what they tend to be in the rest of the DC metro area, and the selection is uniformly great. So they clearly buy way more then they're selling, and what they do sell, they sell for far less than its market price - yet they've somehow they've stayed afloat for decades. So yeah, if you can get there, well worth the trek. In DC proper, the only record store I know of that still sells CDs (and not exclusively records) is Smash Records in Adams Morgan. I don't know how much they bother with film music CDs (CDpot is a rare record store that actually features an extensive soundtrack collection), but Adams Morgan is worth the visit if you're from out of town anyway (if you're looking for a good coffee shop while you're there, I recommend Tryst). Second Story Books in Dupont Circle also tends to sell used CDs, and if you're lucky enough to find anything there you can probably get it for a buck or two. Both Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan are fairly close to each other, so you could easily hit both in the same afternoon.

There used to be a LOT of TERRIFIC CD and USED CD stores down in Dupont Circle. One that I remember was Graffiti Records, which is where I bought my Oscar promo of Young's score for The Shipping News. Out in Alexandria on King Street, near the very end of the street was a used record and CD store.... but even if it isn't still in existence, it's a very nice walk down to it from the Metro. I also remember that I bought my promo copy of A.I. at Kemp Mill Records down in Dupont Circle. Ahhhh... such wonderful memories.....

One other recommendation, though it's off the beaten path. If you end up taking a day trip to the Baltimore inner harbor while you're here, there's a huge store in Fell's Point called The Sound Garden. Definitely worth checking out. Sound Garden is fantastic - one of my favorite record stores in the country. Like I said before, I go to places like that mainly for vinyl now, but it's the sort of store where, at least as of a few years ago, they still had used CD copies of things like Man with the Golden Arm and those CAM Morricone albums. They also have a substantial and very well-curated selection of used DVD and Bluray.

No,no,no..... you misunderstood.... I meant it was one of those "for promotional use only" CDs... like when LPs had the holes punched in them.... it was not the Oscar promo.... sorry for the misunderstanding!

All of these were my haunts, too, when I first moved to the area in the mid-90s. I think Kemp Mill closed down not long after I arrived, so I may have gotten in only one visit, but I do recall snagging Holdridge's EL PUEBLO DEL SOL and a few of the Bernstein Mainstream CDs at a few of the Dupont Circle shops. I miss all of the Tower Records stores, too, especially the one in DC off of Pennsylvania Avenue, as I recall, not too far from GW. Loved the separate classical room! Also the one near Fair Oaks Mall, in Fairfax.
