What was the first film featuring a film that had a score by your favorite composer you saw in a theater ("Alien" was the first film I saw in a theater with a Jerry Goldsmith score).

Either "Vertigo" or "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad" when I was very young. Both made huge, unbelievable, impressions on me.

GONE WITH THE WIND - Max Steiner - about 1954

THE ROBE - Alfred Newman - about 1954

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS - Elmer Bernstein - 1956

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS - Victor Young - 1956

SHANE - Victor Young - about 1956

HIGH NOON - Dimitri Tiomkin - about 1955

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN - Elmer Bernstein - 1960. This is the film score that really made me
a film score fan.

THE THIEF OF BAGDAD - Miklos Rozsa - about 1955. (saw on TV)

..... I know, I listed more than one score and composer. smile

Probably Star Trek: The Motion Picture....which I mostly recall on a subconscious level.

But I actually remember seeing Supergirl as a child and loving the score.

And although Goldsmith is my favorite, seeing The Empire Strikes Back is my first memory of childhood (and what got me hooked on film music).

SNOW WHITE AND THE 7 DWARFS

Saw this in reissue in 1952; scared the wits out of me. Hid under the seats for most of it.

I was 3.

Later wrote a letter about it to the New York Times, which was printed.

But loved the music, and the Disneyland soundtrack lp's, of this and CINDERELLA, were among the first I ever bought with my own money.

I think the first film I saw was the first "Asterix", but the first film I remember is "Polar Express", and yes Alan Silvestri's score really haunted me for years!

In 5th grade, my friend Cary had the London Records recording of "The Fantasy Film World of Bernard Herrmann." We listened to it in rapt attention over and over.

Not too long after this introduction, we attended a special Saturday morning screening for kids at the Paramount Theater in Austin, TX. The film was "Jason and the Argonauts." We applauded when the name Bernard Herrmann appeared on the screen!

Either "Vertigo" or "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad" when I was very young. Both made huge, unbelievable, impressions on me.

Also the only films scored by Herrmann of which the orchestras weren't conducted by him (because of the '58 musicians strike). This explains why "The 7th Voyage Of Sinbad" carries only the credit "Music By Bernard Herrmann" rather than "Music Composed And Conducted By Bernard Herrmann" (it was performed by the Graunke Symphony Orchestra Of Munich under the direction of its conductor Kurt Graunke).

"Jaws" the first feature film i saw in a theater that was my introduction to John Williams.

Me, too. I used to write film reviews for some friends' fanzine, and I've preserved a few of those as blog entries. One of those I wrote on the tenth anniversary of "Jaws" where I recounted my experience becoming enamored with the film and its soundtrack album, which my dad gifted me out of the blue just before he took me to see the film on my 12th birthday:
