I don't mean a character that was there for some breif scene, I mean some annoying and/or pointless character shoe-horned into a film that otherwise would have been good or at least okay. I don't expect a film to suddenly be made a masterpiece by removing some shit character.

While people in another thread are about to spring Jar Jar Binks upon the poor unsuspecting Onya, it occured to me there are other films that would be improved, even if slightly, by removing somebody. Fans have actually made edits to remove JAr JAr, and I see (I didn't read it), people are now paying for a version that has done that. If only other films were so lucky. Unfortunately, there's no amount of editing that will make The Phantom Menace worth watching again, so it's beyond salvage.

So, what other films could benefit from this? Two came to my mind.

  • The original "Judge Dredd". By no means a great film, but it could benefit from removing Rob Schneider from it. In fact, most films could benefit from removing Rob Schneider from them, but that's a whole other story.

For some bizarre reason that will probably baffle people until the end of time, the writers not only introduced this completely un-needed character into the film, but then even more strangely went about making him essentially a main character even into the climax of the film. Good God, why?

    Anyway, he needs to go.

  • "The Fifth Element"

You know, I like this film. I want to like it even more, though I won't pretend it's a great science fiction work. But aside from a couple of cheesy score cues with a "hip" beat that should have never have been done (that would help the scenes), much like Dredd there was a sudden introduction of a completely pointless and un-needed character: Ruby Rhod, a rapping super star who's all about flash and no substance who's a whiny bitch that brings a much ill-advised comedic element to every scene he's in. Played by Chirs Tucker of the Rush Hour films, the character is again shoe-horned into the film a a semi main character even to the end. Dear Zod, why?

Editing him out completely and replacing one or two of the score cues, would make this a much better film.

For those of you who have not seen it, here is the shit character at work:

(yes, his pointless character actually hogs all the spotlight for several minutes in the film for no good reason)

Dot (Selena Gomez) in "The Fundamentals of Caring". Pointless character, terribly written, badly performed.

Frigo (Adventureland) - All he does is punch Jesse Eisenberg's character in the junk and - at one point - pisses on a patio door. I get the feeling that writer/director Greg Mottola wanted to create a breakout character a la McLovin from his SUPERBAD, but this schmuck added nothing to the story and derailed an otherwise decent dramedy.

Mub (Epic) - I'm reminded of how annoying I initially considered Olaf to be in the ads for FROZEN, only to find him pretty amusing in the film proper. Compare him with Mub, who was not only 10 times more irritating than he was in the ads, but could easily have been snipped from the narrative with no ill effects on anything. This, in a nutshell, is why Blue Sky will never, ever be Disney.

or what about the idea proposed by Mark Leyner in his 1992 book Et Tu Babe. Where in the future you can buy Altered copies of movies.

In his book he takes Arnold Schwarzenegger films and has them altered so that EVERY character is played by Schwarzenegger.

Independence Day- Russell Casse (Randy Quaid). Not a fan of the film in general but man was he a cringe worthy character. I want to say a pointless character and side story, but I know some would argue he represented the average American who becomes a hero in a time of crisis.

Superman Returns Who ever played "Ms Teschmacher 2.0". I don't remember the characters name or the actress. Not a fan of this film either.

To take a contrary approach to the query posted by the OP, I'd suggest that Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall & Spectre would have all been vastly improved if they had INCLUDED the character of James Bond smile

    "I knew you'd say that."

Definitely a disposable character, but the recognition pose he does on the prison shuttle (holding his hand up to Dredd's face so only the below-helmet scowl is visible) made me laugh. That was more of a Stallone joke, but I loved it.

While the "movie Bond" depicted by Connery has its charms, I felt Craig's Bond was more like the book character.

...as played by Roger "Lord Brett Sinclair" Moore, no doubt.

Look, you've let Daniel Craig's genius ruin your middle age; don't let it hit the ejector seat button on your dotage, too.

Let's remove Elliott "Ted" Gould from bob & carol & ted & alice so that Robert "Bob" Culp wouldn't need to wife-swap - he'd invite Dyan "Alice" Cannon over for a threesome with Natalie "Carol" Wood. big grin

[revised title: bob ... with carol & alice]

The Cat and Audrey Hepburn are the best two actors in the film!

As much as I enjoy watching Die Hard, I agree with Roger Ebert that it would have been better without Paul Gleason's character Dwayne Robinson.

Top Gun would have been more fun without Kelly McGillis' unnecessary love interest. They were trying to copy An Officer and a Gentleman. Bigger box office, though.
