BTW, the vile "N-Word" is unlikely to ever go away especially since there are some African-Americans who "lovingly" refer to themselves using that very term. Delightful.roll eyes

Imagine if women lovingly refer to each other with the "C" word? Or how about the "B" word. "She's my B*tch". It's such a quagmire!

It's done to rob the word of its hateful power, and to a large degree it's done that, but it's still an ugly word, unpleasant to hear. Richard Pryor had a thoughtful bit about it concerning a visit to Africa.

So instead of banning the swastika in Germany, they should have re-purposed it as a peace sign?

I don't understand your reply? What does that have to do with American blacks using the n-word with each other?

Anyway, having just watched the last season of OITNB, do you know that all you have to do is add four lines to the swastika and it's a window?

Your explanation was they took something hateful (in this case a word) and made it less hateful. So I just used the swastika as an example of something else regarded as hateful. Though I'm sure some purist is going to tell me the German's "stole" that symbol and made it hateful. Maybe not the greatest of analogies.

I think that a"purist" would tell you exactly that because that's actually what the German Nazi Party did with the ancient swastika. Am I wrong?

Anyway, what's there not to understand about American blacks using the word "nigger" as a term of endearment between each other? It robs the word of its psychologically hurtful power. Even our current president understand this -- especially if you saw the last Washington Press Corp dinner. Now days whenever you hear that word come out of a white mouth, all it says is that person is a raging moron or worse. I would imagine there's not one black person in the US any longer that subconsciously thinks they might be a nigger in the literal sense, not even to the slightest degree. That wasn't always the case....

The term was most egreriously used in THE COWBOYS, IMO, a film I have some serious ethical issues with (although the score is fantastic, of course).

I think it just makes it all the more convoluted. The word can now have a positive or negative
connotation based upon how it's used and who uses it. But what ever makes ppl happy.

BTW anyone who lives in America is an African American. Think about it. wink

Exactly, I was going to get around to that, but you beat me to it!

It's one of the depressing things about humanity in the 21st century so far; the consistent and insistent need of so many to categorize people as if we were all different breeds of dogs. It's all bullshit -- we're all the same animal.

Except you-know-who.... that guy is a raging jackass! wink

What?!!! A Norwegian coming in here to tell us something about about American culture? Is this guy retarded? Who does he think he is, an Albanian? Which is worse, Albanians or Norwegians -- what's the difference?

(OK, Mr. Film Scholar, tell me what movie this Albanian/Norwegian put down is from and from what actor in that movie?)

Oh, and learn to spell egregiously!

You're certainly a character, Rory.

You're certainly a character, Rory.

And what are you, O' Norwegian character?

Anyway, the movie is a forgotten 1990 comedy called TUNE IN TOMORROW, with Barbara Hershey, Keanu Reeves and especially Peter Falk.

Set in a radio station in 1950s New Orleans, the funniest portions of the film have to do with the fictional radio serial Peter Falk's character has created. The insults he inserts in his scripts against the Albanians are laugh-out-loud funny. At the end of the movie he switches to persecuting Norwegians.

Maybe someone here remembers it?
