Epic release ! I'm thrilled !

It's going to be a long, long summer...

And for those who love History, a piece of unfortunate little-known information is as follows :

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/08/24/who-liberated-paris-in-august-1944.html

Amado Granell Mesado, Paris's very first liberator to be greeted inside the City Hall by Jean Moulin’s successor, Georges Bidault, president of the National Resistance Council !

Fantastic Looking set! James. Just a query: Are the 'General Tanz/ On The Terrace 'cues from THE NIGHT OF THE GENERALS suite, the same recording sessions on a previous compilation set (Notre Dam De Paris)? Or they an entirely new recording?

Main Title has never been recorded before...did not even appear on the OST LP..... On the terrace I did record before...now remastered...

Can't wait to have this! The re-creation of the IS PARIS BURNING? LP on disc 2 is a nice touch. Has it been edited together, or is it a completely separate performance?

The cherry on top for this impressive and important release.

The whole title sequence is very powerful, from the 'wolf's lair' stuff through to the big ostinato as the German parade through Paris. Jarre the percussionist, as with 'The Longest Day', does give the devil some of his best bits! But the charm of the French stuff is very real in this score, not the usual fake Gallic squeeze-box kitsch. You can feel he lived it.

Even if people aren't into French cafe-style music, they'll love this big epic score.

In the score there was a short cue just for 12 pianos to underscore Hitler's rage...never used in the film but does appear on new CD

I wasn't sure I was going to order this new set, just because I have put myself on a mostly-moratorium for a while as daughter goes off to college, but now that you've said this - I know I can't be satisfied with the old album.

I've always wished for a recording of the extended percussion cue from the start of THE LONGEST DAY. It's called "BBC Drums" on the soundtrack album, but it fades out after about one minute. A complete presentation on one of these Jarre re-recordings would be great.

I always thought that music was by Beethoven ......

Beethoven's Fifth symphony I think it is.

The 'BBC Drums' refers to the victory signal sent out on BBC radio in code to resistance groups in Europe. It's Beethoven but with drums it's iconic. It stems from the Morse code for the letter 'V', dot-dot-dot-dash. (James knows this, he's being ironic).

The track's main opener ostinato for the murdered agent and the various scene setters is what's being discussed.

But that's another film. 'The Longest Day', 'Is Paris Burning?' and 'The Train' make a fine little unofficial trilogy.
