Carl Davis – “The Understudy,” “Scandal”

Heather McIntosh – “Z for Zachariah,” “Honeymoon”

Antonio Pinto – “Amy,” “Senna”

Shigeru Umebayashi – “The Grandmaster,” “2046”

Marcelo Zarvos – “Rock the Kasbah,” “The Beaver”

There are only a few individuals on this list whose musical judgments I'd trust, namely Carl Davis with Zarvos & Umebayashi (and maybe Pinto or McIntosh).

However, regarding ...

Mary J. Blige

... I ask myself "Can this person truly assess the musical values of film music scores written by classically-trained composers?"

Don't discount Mary J Blige she can certainly cross R&B with pop and Rock music. she is versatile, and also really loved her No More Drama when she did the version with the Young and the Restless theme, not surewhose idea that was but it worked.

Indeed. The notion that a pop artist is by definition tin-eared and unsophisticated is a limited understanding of a much more complicated reality. I once had a long talk with a rock musician about none other than Alex North. My good friend played in a string quartet at a party hosted by a member of the Rolling Stones and each and every one of them had specific and esoteric requests for them to play. Please don't congratulate yourself for your alleged superior sophistication.

Years ago I had the chance to interview Rupert Holmes of "The Pina Colada Song" fame and we got into a discussion of film music. He started playing Bernard Herrmann chords on the keyboard in his office and demonstrating Herrmann's technique of using a chord progression and then repeating it an octave higher or lower. If you listen to his radio parody "Psycho Drama" on the Widescreen album you can hear his homage to Herrmann.

When I read the Mary J. Blige comment, it occurred to me to respond with a question of my own, to wit: Why not? Haven't those classically trained composers in the Music Branch always been tasked with assessing the film values of the nominees in the Best Song category?

Marcus Miller is a great musician and has scored several films. Good for him.
