I gather there aren't many Pittsburgh FSM posters here as no one has mentioned last weekend's concert of "The Film Music Of Howard Shore" with Ludwig Wicki conducting the Pittsburgh Symphony. The concert started with the premiere performance of Shore's "The Hobbit", a four movement concert suite culled from the scores from the three Hobbit films, featuring parts for mezzo soprano and two bagpipers. Following an intermission, Composer shore was joined by Jon Burlingame for an onstage interview setting up groups of score samples from THE FLY, DEAD RINGERS, NAKED LUNCH (great sax solo by Terry Steele), BIG, MRS. DOUBTFIRE, ED WOOD (complete with Theremin provided by Lydia Kavina), SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, Se7eN, HUGO, GANGS OF NEW YORK, THE AVIATOR, plus "The Lighting of the Beacon" from RETURN OF THE KINGS, and, finally, THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING Symphonic Suite featuring boy soprano. All in all, a wide ranging swath of Shores' varied work. Three friends and myself attended the Sunday afternoon performance where the audience demographic skewed "older" (I should talk!), yet the performance received a standing ovation at the end. Following the performance, attending friend Mark "Soundtrackman" Trachtman had arranged with Jon Burlingame to meet for drinks and dinner nearby. Mr. Burlingame proved to be witty, charming, erudite (without a hint of affectation), and just a genuinely nice guy who seemed to enjoy having a conversation with other film music enthusiasts. A memorable afternoon, indeed.
