Nice review. Will snag the CD, I suspect.

I simply cannot recommend this score enough. Imagine, if you will, a more mesmerizing version of Journey with more emotive undertones (if that's even possible), and you have Abzu. Wintory's Journey is one of my favorite scores of all time, but Abzu may be even better. Not kidding. This album is absolutely breathtaking!

Right, if I were watching the movie it would be awesome. But I'm not, so I don't understand why this is something people are interested in listening to on its own.

I changed something in the above quote which shows how dumb it is.

Funny that I didn't notice your comment. But I think the same thing applies to many film scores that are functional in the movie but not so much something I would want to listen to by itself. Perhaps just like with film scores you really have to play the game to get the emotional attachment that makes a more atmospheric soundtrack something that moves you.

My friend, believe me when I say that this score is entirely enjoyable independent of the game. I've paid for and downloaded said game, and the synergy between the two is incredible, but the score towers above the game in terms of sheer quality and emotion. I strongly encourage you to take the plunge and check it out! Truth be told, I haven't even reached the halfway point of the game (I believe), but I've listened to the entirety of the score numerous times.

Look, if you don't like the music....that's fine. But I always find it odd when people can't separate music layed out by itself from whatever media it was attached to. Something doesn't get better out of context just because one experiences it in context. The music stays static.

I would argue that last part, TE. As an example, when I first listened to Price's GRAVITY, it didn't do a whole lot for me, neither the first, "noisy" half, nor the later parts, which sounded overwrought to me. Then I watched the movie and was blown away how well the score worked in context. Completely changed my opinion of it.

I get what you're saying, that the music doesn't change, it's one's perception of it.

...and re-reading your post, I'm not quite sure I needed to argue that last part. Seems like we were in agreement all along. big grin

It's been a long day...

Well, I would agree that....appreciation....of the music might change by putting it into context, but that shouldn't, theoreticlaly, change how one feels about it out of context.

I'll give a example -- Total Recall I don't find particularly engaging on disc outside of a couple cues (an opinion I know isn't shared on here, I will grant) -- but I did feel when watching the movie that it was absolutely perfect in context. This, however, didn't change my opinion that it's not all that interesting by itself.

Cool. Surprised I didn't get an email about it though, seems like something one on the artist's Bandcamp ML would get notified of, but hey....

Never bought it as it didn't quite 'gel' with me enough but it's not bad either and free is free....
