Sorry if this has been previously discussed but..... Is the Intrada edition of The Sand Pebbles that much improved audio-wise compared to the Varese? I have the Varese and go back and forth about whether or not to get the Intrada.

No comparison. If you even somewhat enjoy the score you will be so grateful you got the Intrada. You're welcome. smile

Disagree. There is no clear cut winner as far as sound goes. I have both and listen mostly to the Intrada because it is complete. That said the Varese is near complete and the poster above did not quite have the correct number of tracks on the Varese. The Varese gives one a more fuller sound. The Intrada is probably more 'audiophile' hitting the highs and lows better but not as full and 'missing' the mid range. Of course just my opinion.

My favorite Goldsmith and that's saying a lot!

Many thanks...Just to clarify (but it seems you all understood it), I AM talking about the Varese Club original soundtrack recording, NOT the re-recording Goldsmith did for Varese. Thanks again!

I'm not talking about the rerecording as it does not do justice to the score.

That was my mistake. The Varese I was referring to was the one Goldsmith rerecorded with RNSO in 1997. That is 13 tracks. The one that has a lot more tracks is the Varese CD Club 2002 with believe 30. Sorry about that. Not sure I was aware of it or forgot. Sorry about that.

I found the Intrada master to be worth the upgrade, though it's been too long since I did an A/B comparison to be able to give specific details. Like THE BLUE MAX, this is one of my all-time favorite Goldsmith scores, so any discernible improvement was bound to win me over!

This is supposed to be the 2002 Varese "Deluxe Edition" CD with 30 tracks vs. the 2011 Intrada "Complete Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" 2-Disc edition with 32 tracks on Disc 1 and 18 tracks on Disc 2, correct?

And the question is which one should you own based on the sound quality?

Intrada. Intrada.

Get the Intrada 2-Disc release if only because the cue "Repel Boarders" is in mono on the Varese, but is stereo on the Intrada release. That is, if the Intrada edition can still be got. I assume it can.

Also, the 2-Disc Intrada edition is produced by Nick Redman AND Mike Matessino. That plus the fact that the Intrada edition is from 2011 should be a good indication of the level of quality of the sound on that edition. Others may disagree, of course.

I own both and actually prefer the sound quality on the varese deluxe edition. The varese is distinctly warmer, and though the Intrada is certainly MUCH cleaner and brighter, the overall mix on the Intrada is a little different, and in my opinion a little more shrill.

I think the ideal program in all the varese deluxe tracks + extra unreleased tracks from the 2cd intrada recording programmed in chronological order.

This is hands down one of Goldsmith's all time masterpieces, so if you love the score, you can't go wrong with either release, but they are different from a mix standpoint. My recommendation is if you can afford it, to get both releases and combine them. smile
