So I saw the season finale of PENNY DREADFUL today, and I was kinda shocked when they killed off Vanessa, Eva Green's character -- who's the cornerstone of the whole series, really. But then I googled the series, and found out it had -- in fact -- been cancelled, and I had just watched the series finale.

It's no news to me that they're cancelling all the shows I like, but this series was just finding itself and getting into steam in the third season. Also introducting new and interesting characters and character arcs. And then, finito.

It's a real shame.

Abel Korzeniowski's score was also one of the best in TV land right now.

The witches series 2 was the best.

It was not "cancelled". It is ending. That's a big difference. I'd much rather more showrunners ended their shows when they were over rather than dragging them out.

True, but there were so many new elements in the third season, and unfulfilled story arcs, it's pretty clear more seasons were inititally intended. John Logan only knew midway through the third season that it would, in fact, be the last. It's 'ending' only in formality.

According to Logan he's known for several years that the third season would be the last, and it sounds like Showtime would have continued the show had Logan wanted to do so.

This looked to be right up my street, but I don't get Sky Atlantic, I'll keep an eye out for a good priced 1-3 box set

Look on the bright side, Thor, now you have time to watch THE SAND PEBBLES! wink

For me, the first season failed to work to impart any spell on me. But for you folks that liked it, at least it didn't drag on forever, it seemed, like TRUE BLOOD. Gawd, that show became torture. Can't believe I wasted my time watching every episode of that eventual crapfest.

You'll forgive me but that's a load of horses**t.

There is no way this was supposed to be the series finale, why not tell folks ahead of time?

The most logical guess is that the ratings were down this season and SHOWTIME decided to not pick up a fourth year and this is just face saving.....

There were far too many loss ends to think he thought this season was it...

Whatever the case, I'll miss it.

Maybe Showtime needed to save a few pennies after they shelled out more than they had expected on the upcoming TWIN PEAKS series.

It certainly wasn't very scary was my problem with it. I just want to see Eva Green naked again. That's all I cared about. Now, I guess she can get naked on another show.

Ok, so who here as actually read any Penny Dreadfuls, that's what I'd like to know. I read about 25 chapters of Varney the Vampire when I was a teenager, until I just couldn't take the turgid storytelling any more. And the same with a reprinted Sweeney Todd that came out around the release of the Burton Sondheim take. But they are just so badly written, I've never been able to get through one.

Ok, back to the real topic. (Haven't seen the show, won't unless it becomes available on Netflix or Amazon Prime, so nothing to add.)

Yes ended with a few storylines rather feebly rushed and bundled in to a box. And one or two - the female creature especially - left hanging.
Exceptional acting from Billie piper though.

wait just a second!
Eva Green got naked????
One of the (many) reasons i stopped watching was her cover-up wardrobe.

So, just what eps is she nekkid in?

I'm glad it ended properly.
It would be quite tiresome to watch another season with evil entities abusing poor Miss Ives.
And there isn't more evil character than Lucifer or Dracula anyway.

Yeah, I didn't say she got naked in PENNY DREADFUL -- and that was the problem. The ratings might have been GAMES OF THRONES huge if Miss Green had just kept the dream alive, the dream I had after seeing THE DREAMERS, that is. CAMELOT too, and that DARK SHADOWS thing people are all ready forgetting fast. All better if Eva Green just did it all in the nude. Every frame, nekkid!
