W.C. FIELDS AND ME
Music Composed and Conducted by Henry Mancini
Premiere CD release of nostalgic, tuneful score by Henry Mancini (The Pink Panther, The Great Race, The Great Waldo Pepper, Hatari!) for a 1976 biopic of Hollywood golden-age comedian W.C Fields, starring Rod Steiger, Valerie Perrine and John Cassidy. This film was the first of four collaborations between director Arthur Hiller and Mancini; it was followed by the celebrated Silver Streak, Nightwing and Married to It.
This Quartet Records CD features the entire original stereo LP from album masters preserved in mint condition by UMG. The original soundtrack LP for W.C. Fields and Me was assembled for MCA Records by Sonny Burke, who had previously produced Mancini’s album for The Great Waldo Pepper (also available from Quartet Records). In addition to containing the majority of the film’s score, the album includes a number of dialogue selections featuring Rod Steiger and Valerie Perrine that sometimes play over Mancini’s music. While the score-only cuts for these tracks were not available for this premiere CD release, the album features enough musical repetition that all of Mancini’s major themes can be heard in full at various points, unencumbered by dialogue.
Detailed liner notes by John Takis and an essay written by producer Jay Weston for the original LP complete the package.

Nice to finally have this available. Too bad that a dialogue-free expanded version couldn't be released.
Or even an unexpanded version with dialogue-free versions of the tracks. I'm kinda amazed that only the fully mixed-with-dialogue version survived in Universal's vaults. Still, this is certainly better than nothing and I'm sure Quartet did the absolute best they could.

Now we have THE GREAT WALDO PEPPER and W.C.FIELDS AND ME from Quartet. I wonder if there will be more Henry Mancini-Universal LP's transfered to CD. For that matter, any former LP's from Universal would be welcomed. It doesn't necessarily have to be the scores of Henry Mancini.
Mancini also scored a remake of "Little Miss Marker" around the same time as "Waldo" and "W.C.". This on also had a short score. I think it was a Jennings Lang production.

The clarinet solos are performed by Willie Schwartz. Known as "the sound" in Glenn Miller's band, he was the lead voice on "Moonlight Serenade" and many, many others. I believe Mancini met him when he was with Tex Beneke's Miller band. Composer Nan Schwartz is Willie's daughter.

Not an original Mancini score but years ago Varese released an LP one side of which was Alex North's score to "Four Girls In Town" which was orchestrated by Mancini who was credited on the jacket.
Around the same time Mancini recorded the theme on a Coral records single.
Mancini also recorded North's "Long Hot Summer" on another Coral single.
These with other early Mancini recordings can be found on the multi-disc set "Henry Mancini
