Incidentally . . .

(meaning: I can't think what other thread in which to mention this)

. . . did everybody notice Gil Gerard, on the BIG screen again, when you went to see "The Nice Guys"? He turns up late in the picture and it looks to me as if the hair and makeup people were trying to make him look like Stan Lee usually looks in his Marvel movie cameos.

Bidi, bidi, bidi, f**k you, Buck!

One of the all-time Sci-fi TV worsts. Remastered in HD?!! The mind boggles.

I have (quite deliberately) not revisited this series since tuning out a few episodes into its second season.

(But I still love the music from the pilot.)

Gil Gerard was quite charismatic and likeable. I loved Pamela Hensley! But I agree the TV series was unwatchable.

I don't hate it, I'm just indifferent to it and this release. For those that might find this news exciting... Congrats and enjoy!

For an indifferent person you sure went full force in your previous post.
As for the series: I love it. Likeable lead characters, a lush for a main enemy and that lovely late 70s feel.
As for Twiki: he was no more anoying than R2D2 and a lot less anoying than C3PO.

I'm going to get me this when I finally have found a reliable supplier of a region free Blu-ray player.

Disco Stu.

Good things about Buck Rogers in the 25th Century;

The music for the pilot.

Erin Gray

Erin Gray's breasts

Bad things about Buck Rogers in the 25th Century

Everything else.

Or get MakeMKV.

Odd that a nostalgia item like this would be region encoded, rather than region-free. The NTSC/PAL/SECAM distinction shouldn't matter anymore with HDTVs. And again, it is a nostalgia item, so a controlled released date is irrelevant.

"Get your clamps off me, you damn, dirty robot!"
Some of us weren't watching for Gil Gerard. Buck could still have done the "blew it up" scene. But that would be aping another sci-fi film.

Maybe this is part of the reason I have a fond memory of seeing the pilot on its original theatrical release.

It's just my sense of humor -- full force.

I agree with you about the Star Wars robots, but SW is also a product of the seventies and I'm not indifferent to that decade -- I lived through it and survived, and I HATED the seventies, the whole damn decade -- and that's no joke.

Anyway, I recently gave in and got a region free Blu-ray player. I got it from 220-Electronics and I found them most reliable. I got a Panasonic BD-91 firmware upgraded and it works great, but they sell many region free brands.

So, for what its worth, check them out and if it works out for you, then I've done my part to bring you together with something from the seventies that you love. Wouldn't that be ironic, and funny?

Hmmm.... Did you forget to take your lithium, Rory? wink
So you hate the silly cowboyesque future of Buck Rogers, and hate the serious misanthropic future of Beneath The POTA. I would have thought you'd glean something enjoyable from one of them. To paraphrase Zira's goodbye to Taylor, "You're so damn crotchety."

Hey, I think the POTA TV series is also one of Sci-fi TV's worst. But I don't hate it, I just don't like it. It's entertainment, but for me it doesn't entertain.

My mind boggles that so many people don't understand the difference between not liking something because you don't think it's good, but not hating it.

True hate is a strong emotion and really the flip side of love, so to really hate something you can't be indifferent to it, but actually kind of obsessed with it.

Am I getting through? Anybody agree with me?

As for "Buck Rodgers in the 25th Century," I truly rarely thought of it in over thirty-five years -- now that's indifference -- but I do remember when it was on, caught a few episodes, but what I only recall well from it was "Bidi, bidi, bidi," the hot chicks on it, and some guy who was supposed to be a hawkman or something.

Otherwise, the show was truly quite forgettable, except I guess for you little boys of the seventies.

Peace, baby.

Hey, you just rewrote this, didn't you, or am I going batty? Don't answer that.

Would you believe that I just watched BENEATH this morning? Weeeeeeell, it's true. I was in the mood for it, and because I now consider it kind of a kiddie movie, Saturday morning is a good time to give it a rewatch.

I like a lot of things in it, but the whole just doesn't gel. It needed a better script and a stronger director, but mostly it's an unnecessary sequel. What I don't enjoy about it is that it's not as good as the first film, and I don't think it compliments it and is really a downer. As bleak as the original seems, I don't find it a downer.

The classic original film is complete unto itself.

"Ninety percent of everything is crud."
—Sturgeon's Law

I get you and agree with you. My friends know that I'm a merciless critic of entertainment because of Sturgeon's Law. There's a lot of crud out there that I don't waste my time on—and that means not working up any venom over it, either. I just shut it off, leave the cinema, or put the book down.

And like most people, I have my "guilty pleasures": those things I know are crud (like BUCK ROGERS IN THE 25TH CENTURY), yet waste time on them anyway. In the case of BUCK, I was a horny 'teen at the time with very few geek outlets, except science books and my dad's large sci-fi collection.

You sound like the off-thinking Zeerdonians from the second season episode "Shgoratchx!" (One of the most gratuitous bits of fan service.) They were fascinated by Col. Deering's bumps and intent on "examining" her—purely for science, of course. The threads used to pull her buttons were just barely visible in Standard Def. In HD you won't be able to miss them.

Yeah, I do alot of revision. And I understand the difference between personal taste and objectivity (ie you can hate a well-made movie, and love a poorly made one). But Disco Stu already pointed out the contrast in your "exuberance" so it's not just me. My only criticism is that it's a downer to read people apply such a broad brush, extreme praise or hate. Btw, I figured you probably hated (or were dissatisfied with) the POTA tvshow. I only watched a few minutes here and there, back in the day. Looked like Starsky and Hutch in the future. Fluffy hair, and somebody hang gliding...
Same thing with BUCK ROGERS. It looked like a Battlestar Galactica ripoff which was a Star Wars Ripoff....the airbrushed actors, the uniforms, that damn robot was enough. On the plus side, it generated a good joke in MST3K ("Bidi bidi bidi, beat cheeks, Buck."). But since I never watched either series completely, or recently, I cant justify my limited POV and wouldnt want to piss on someone's announcement thread. I come to praise Buck Rogers...wink

But you see I don't consider my first comment as pissing on someone's announcement thread.

I have no problem with this announcement. I like that the guy is always making these announcements about British Blu-ray releases and in other threads I've thanked him for them and told him to please keep it up.

My comment is about my opinion of the show, which is only that, my opinion and in this case it's a negative one because I honestly think the show stinks.

Now, am I wrong to think that it stinks? Well, that's entirely a matter of opinion. Do I have a right to think it stinks? I think you'd say I do, but it seems to me you're saying I don't have a right to post it in this thread, or that I really shouldn't because it comes across as rude or a downer.

Well, I just don't share your sensibilities. For me, I'm just being honest and I'm expressing it through ridicule and sarcasm, especially sarcasm because I find sarcasm funny.

But this is the thing that gets me in trouble here over and over... I'm not aiming my sarcasm at anyone. I'm aiming at a show that I think sticks. I'm aiming at a thing, not a person. I can't hurt the feelings of a TV show.

But I think by deflection others here feel hurt because it's something they love and they get offended because they take my ridicule as an attack on their taste. But it really isn't. It's really only about me.

One of my favorite movies is ONE MILLION YEARS B.C. It's going to be coming out soon and the guy who started this thread announced it's UK release on Blu-ray in another thread. Now I love the movie, but honestly I think it stinks, it's a terrible film. Now before that makes your head explode, that means as a serious cinephile Iknow it's a mediocre movie, but there's things about it that appeal to me and I enjoy rewatching the film.

Now, maybe it's just me, but if someone in the next post makes a negative comment about ONE MILLION YEARS B.C., I may most likely agree with it, but I'm certainly not going to be offended by it or let it get me down. Even if it's the original PLANET OF THE APES, and it's the most juicy sarcasm about you can imagine, I'll still most likely laugh, if it makes an honest point about it.

But I don't take it personal. And recognize that I'm really under no obligation in a public forum like this to make sure that I'm not a downer to anyone. If I HAD to post under such a rule, I wouldn't be here because I'd consider the message board to be run by Nazis!

And listen, I'm really not crotchety.... I just play one on the FSM message boards!

And I also don't get offended when my grammer is corrected, unlike someone who put me on their ignore list when I made a joke about their punctuation mistake. Believe me, I was on the floor over that one.

Some here really need to lighten up. Life is short, it'll be over for all of us soon enough, and this is just a stupid message board.

And you can always put someone on your ignore list. wink

Well, then maybe it's your "Southern" sensibilities, assuming that applies here. That whole "dont tread on me" thing...laid back until someone (appears to) step on you. I was merely pointing out that extreme comments can be a conversation stopper, and noone should be surprised by that.
I use hyperbole to espouse a POV too (you havent noticed?), but given the limitations of message boarding, you know it's not always wise, even if you constantly use the winking smilie.
