Plenty to disagree with here!

Interesting, I guess. The Mummy and The 'burbs inclusion is pretty strange, though I do love The 'burbs.

Hmm. Seems it's not just the people on this board that think Goldsmith "stakes a strong claim to being the greatest film composer who ever lived."

This guy obviously isn't possessed of much knowledge of Goldsmith before 1970 (a very fertile period for the young up-and-coming JG)--with the exception of THE BLUE MAX and PLANET OF THE APES. Any list of Jerry Goldsmith's "30 Greatest Scores" should rightfully include such terrific pre-70 scores like SECONDS, LONELY ARE THE BRAVE, and FREUD, especially if you're listing stuff like THE MUMMY, THE BURBS, and THE SHADOW.

(Just my way of saying, "these kids nowadays.")

The inclusion of THE MUMMY is not strange at all. IMO, it's his best score in the 90s and it's my personal favourite of all he's ever done. It would have clocked in far higher than 30th if I were to do a list.

That being said, a list is a list. Pure subjectivity. His take is as relevant as yours or mine.

Never thought I'd ever agree with someone who's not a Goldsmith fan wink but I agree with you as far as The Mummy being, well, at least among his 1990s best; it's a fun, energetic score. I was rather taken aback when others at this fine forum didn't hold The Mummy in high regard, instead bleating on about the Silvestri effort that followed (and underwhelmed).

I have only 4 of these -1, 3, 4, and 16 - but I have about 30 or 35 of his albums.

Bothe Flint scores should have made the list, along with City of Fear.

I used to like The Mummy plenty, but I don't think it's aged particularly well, for whatever reason. Of course, every time I bring this up, I start thinking of all the parts I still like about it (the little blip of his Fierce Creatures music in I think the "Rebirth" cue toward the end was always funny to me, and the flurry of strings in "Night Boarders" is still hair-raising).

I'll never understand the love for Gremlins, and his chosen sound sample hasn't changed my mind.

Probably decent enough for the film, but I could never get into listening to that CD.

Expletives would have flown if I didn't see Secret of NIMH on that list. All's good in the world.

Lists are always a problem - but this seems like a pretty good one.

This is actually a quite good list of 30 great scores by Goldsmith. Some are not as tailored to my taste, like Gremlins or the Verhoven scores. But I can't dispute that they still display his brilliance, and this writer does a good job of justifying his selections.

As far as "greatEST" goes, any list that doesn't include Lonely Are the Brave, Seconds, or QBVII is profoundly lacking in my book, and others are right to point out the dearth of 60s scores. If I were making my own list of 30 greatest Goldsmith scores I am sure I would swap out about half of the titles this author picked.

Also, there are a few factual inaccuracies -- Goldsmith did not incorporate Alexander Courage's Star Trek fanfare until Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (and then did so in every Trek score of his thereafter, so perhaps the author can be forgiven for assuming it started with the first score in the series). Alexander Courage did himself adapt his full Trek theme for a couple of scenes, but not the fanfare itself.

I completely agree. But still, it's nice to see Goldsmith appreciated. But that ranking.....

How did Twilight Zone escape this list?

I agree. It is another list but at least one with perspective as the author went through the effort to put some thoughtful context into each selection (most lists are just... lists). And its refreshing to see some love for some of Goldsmith's 90's creations.

This certainly covers most of the bases! Definitely a tough one considering Goldsmith's career.

If it were me...

Innerspace should be in the top 15, at least. Quite underrated. Glad to see the love for The Final Conflict, NIMH and The Edge.

Alien and Under Fire should definitely be higher on the list. I would've included First Blood in the Top 10 as well. Probably Lionheart over First Knight.

I certainly agree that Chinatown, Basic Instinct and Star Trek: TMP should always be in the top 5. Always amazed every time I listen to any of those scores.

And although they are fantastic scores, I, personally, would not have included Magic, The Boys From Brazil, The Burbs or Capricorn One on a Top 30 list. Nor The Omen as #1.

Some others I might have mentioned instead: 13th Warrior, Supergirl, The Great Train Robbery, Star Trek: Insurrection (gets better & better with age), Rudy/Hoosiers, LA Confidential, to name a few...

No Dennis the Menace? Kidding, kidding...god, what a horrendous movie...

Conspicuously absent is "A Patch of Blue," my favorite Goldsmith and a top ten score of all-time for me.

Surprised that LEGEND (one of Goldsmith's masterpieces) is not there.
But I guess the writer hasn't seen the movie, or if he has, it's the US version that most people are aquainted with, with the Tangerine Dream score.
