If this is true, I've lost some respect for Mr. Carpenter, and I've admired him my entire life. For decades he has not spoken well of the many Halloween sequels, going so far as to call them "sad" and commenting on how he wants nothing to do with them. If he's really getting involved with the franchise again, it makes me think he truly is in it just for the cash. What a bummer.

David, Carpenter has made it no secret that his only involvement with the sequels (and remakes of his movies) is the money, he even stated on many occasion that every time a new sequel or remake is announced he likes to extend his hand and watch a cheque land in it. At this point in his career I can't say I blame him and given he has been doing lots of music lately it does seem like a cool prospect of having him score another Halloween movie. For me the franchise died after he stopped working on it (part III) so perhaps they can do a better remake than the Zombie one.
Perhaps doing the Lost Themes albums and going out on tour has rejuvenated him?
Seems that way, based on Nick Joy's interview with Carpenter in FSM Online (Vol. 21, #5, for anyone viewing this thread in the future). Just curious: did anyone attend Carpenter's concert last night in LA? I missed it, and the prices for his second LA venue at the Orpheum June 18 are now either sold out or astronomically expensive VIP only.
I'm on the fence about this new "Halloween" news, but happy to see him getting some love. A friend of mine posted a great compilation of Guillermo del Toro's 'Tweetstorm' from yesterday, GDT giving a passionate overview of JC's career:
David Sones, perhaps you are unaware of the fact that John Carpenter has been unable to get his films financed lately. His last film was THE GHOSTS OF MARS released in 2001. In 2010 he directed THE WARD as a job for hire. It was not a personal project nor a particularly good one. The producers asked him to direct it but he wasn't allowed to change it or improve on it in any way. They failed to give it proper distribution and promotion, and it lost money which in turn reflected badly on Carpenter even though it wasn't his fault. And then there is the institutionalized age discrimination. Carpenter is at the age where it is impossible to get funded in Hollywood. He's been trying to get his horror western about the Benders (the true story of a serial killer family in 1870s frontier Kansas) financed for over ten years, as well as other projects, but it's been very frustrating. Perhaps taking on another HALLOWEEN film will empower him once again to get his own films made. I hope so.
In any case, taking the job and earning a living is always the intelligent thing to do in the production business no matter how famous you are or successful you've been. Trust me on this.
As a huge fan of Halloween and Halloween II, I'm really looking forward to this. Though hopefully this will be a direct sequel to Halloween II. Listening to some of the tracks on his recent Lost themes II album makes me confident Carpenter could still deliver another great score for the franchise. Ohh....and please Mr Carpenter use the Shatner mask!
I just found out he'll be playing down the street June 19th. Wish I'd known sooner. The concert is almost sold out. There's a few good seats left, but man are they expensive.
