Well I've given JJ time to post this, but I can't wait no more. Warner Archive are releasing the Ford/Wayne classic war movie They Were Expendable on Blu-ray. On of my favourite war films, I had the old Warner DVD, but it didn't look that great. I thought that there were element problems, but that must have been sorted out, & coming on the heels of She Wore A Yellow Ribbon, this is a good year for the Duke.

Well not my most successful post, no reply's (I knew I should have had Star Wars in the title of this post). Anyway, I now have the Blu-ray of this important & enjoyable John Ford movie, just had a zip through it & it looks great (as does She Wore A Yellow Ribbon).

...now back to Star Wars smile

MGM agreed to pay $30,000, plus royalties up to $20,000, for the motion picture rights to William L. White's book They Were Expendable. As part of the agreement, one third of the purchase price was to be donated to the Navy Relief Fund. The title of White's book was derived from a World War II naval communiqé, reporting the sacrifice of several U.S. PT boats in Manila Bay in order to sink several Japanese cruisers, destroyers, and cargo ships.

FWIW, if I had seen this thread, I would have chimed in sooner. At Amazon, copies of the original book are still available, also in a recent paperback reprint. A new "Behind the Scenes" book offers a treasure trove of on-site photos:
