Schallert played Mint Superintendent Perkins in the 1969 Burt Reynolds western SAM WHISKEY. Arnold Laven directed the film, and worked with his frequent composer-collaborator Herschel Burke Gilbert, whose score has not had a release.

Schallert's "Professor Quigley" tries to get a computer for Medfield College in Walt Disney's THE COMPUTER WORE TENNIS SHOES. He does get his first poster credit in 8 years. Robert Butler directed the 1970 film, and Disney regular Robert F. Brunner provided the score.

Schallert played "CIA Director Grauber" in the high-tech thriller COLOSSUS: THE FORBIN PROJECT. Joseph Sargent directed the 1970 film. Michel Colombier's score has not had a release.

In 1973's CHARLEY VARRICK, Schallert played "Sheriff Bill Horton" who gives chase after "Charley" (Walter Matthau) and his wife "Nadine" (Jacqueline Scott) rob a bank. Schallert appeared in his third and final film for director Don Siegel. Lalo Schifrin released 6 minutes of his score on his own Aleph label.

Schallert reprised his role as "Professor Quigley," the head of the science department at Medfield College, in 1975's THE STRONGEST MAN IN THE WORLD. Vincent McEveety took on the directing chores for this Disney sequel to THE COMPUTER WORE TENNIS SHOES, with Robert F. Brunner returning as composer.

Schallert had a small role as a character called "Francis F. Cody" in the 1976 comedy TUNNEL VISION. The film was co-directed by Brad Swirnoff and Neil Israel. The musical score was by Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter.

In the 1979 television miniseries IKE, Schallert played General Mark Clark, who as commander of the U.S,. Fifth Army, led the invasion of Italy during World War II. The series was co-directed by Boris Sagal and Melville Shavelson. Fred Karlin composed the unreleased score.

Schallert played "Judge M.A. Loring" in Steve Martin's first big comedy film THE JERK. Carl Reiner directed the 1979 film. Jack Elliott's score has not had a release.

Schallert played the father in the third segment of TWILIGHT ZONE--THE MOVIE, a remake of "It's a Good Life." His segment was directed by Joe Dante, which began a relationship between the two. Jerry Goldsmith's score for the 1983 film was most recently released by Film Score Monthly in 2009.

Schallert made a brief appearance as a priest, "Father Bartlett," in Joe Dante's 1984 horror-comedy GREMLINS. Jerry Goldsmith's score was most recently released by Retrograde in 2011.




Schallert had a brief role in 1984's TEACHERS. Arthur Hiller directed the drama. The film only had a song score, which was released on an early Japanese-pressed CD by Capitol Records.

William Schallert appeared as General Robert E. Lee in the first and last episodes of the 6-part television miniseries NORTH AND SOUTH: BOOK II. Kevin Connor directed the 1986 series. Bill Conti's score was released by Varese Sarabande in 2008.

Schallert's third film with director Joe Dante was 1987's INNERSPACE, in which he played "Dr. Greenbush." Jerry Goldsmith's score was released by La-La Land in 2009.

In the 1988 television miniseries WAR AND REMEMBRANCE, William Schallart played Harry Hopkins, who, during World War II, acted as President Franklin Roosevelt's unofficial emissary to British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Dan Curtis directed the series, with his favorite composer Bob Cobert doing the score, which was released by MPI.

Schallert's last appearance in a major feature film was his fourth film with Joe Dante--1993's MATINEE. Schallert played "Dr. Grabow." Jerry Goldsmith's score was released by Varese Sarabande.

William Schallet never really retired from acting. As recently as 2014, at the age of 91, he was in an episode of "2 Broke Girls," playing an elevator operator. Thanks Bill, for all of your good work, and for all of your performances that we have yet to discover.

Did anyone recognize him as "Red Woodloe" the folk singer with stage fright on a 1971 episode of "The Partridge Family"?

Reading above about his musical interests, I wonder anew whether he did his own singin'/guitar pickin'. Anyone know?
