He passed away yesterday at age 93.

"But for all his work - Schallert also played small-town Mississippi mayor Webb Schubert in the Oscar-winning best picture In the Heat of the Night (1967) - the actor often said that the character for which he was most recognized was Federation Undersecretary of Agricultural Affairs Nilz Baris. He's the guy who discovered the batch of furry grain-devouring aliens in "The Trouble With Tribbles," the classic December 1967 episode of NBC's Star Trek.

"The trouble we had with Tribbles was [to] keep your straight face. It was just a lot of fun," he said in an interview for a Trek DVD set."

First Patty Duke, then her on-screen "father."

I'm a big Joe Dante fan and Schallert was one of his unofficial company of actors (along with the he brilliant Dick Miller and also Robert Picardo) so this is a shame, although he had a good long life.

RIP

Schallert's first screen role was an uncredited bit as a "Philadelphia Banker" in the 1947 drama THE FOXES OF HARROW. John M. Stahl directed the film. David Buttolph's score was released by Screen Archives Entertainment in 2005.

I grew up watching Schallert, but like you, Mike_J, I never fully appreciated his comic side until Joe Dante brought it out. Dante had so much fun with Schallert, Kenneth Tobey and Kevin McCarthy!

You shall be missed, Mr. Schallert.

We just presented our 3-D restoration of GOG at the TCM Festival. Mr. Schallert had a brief but memorable role in the film. May he rest in peace.

Schallert played the first of his many scientist roles, and received his first poster credit, in 1951's THE MAN FROM PLANET X. In this Edgar G. Ulmer film, Schallert played "Dr. Mears," a brilliant but devious scientist assisting "Professor Elliott" (Raymond Bond), who has recently discovered "Planet X." Charles Koff scored the film.

Oh, man... I just saw him a couple days ago in an episode of "Gunsmoke" on Encore's Westerns channel, and I thought he was already dead.

I remember him best from THEM!, THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN and COLOSSUS: THE FORBIN PROJECT, and much later, INNERSPACE.

I really enjoyed him over the years and knew his name well.

I envy that in Dante's MATINEE he got to say "human/insect mutation is far from an exact science... "

Ironic that he would die the same year and outlive the star on "The Patty Duke Show". R.I.P. William Schallert.
