I believe he stole it from a classical piece called SPECTRAL SHIMMERS! Can't remember the composer.

BRAINSTORM is a superb score and “Michael’s Gift to Karen” is the crown jewel.

I don't really know the answer to your question, moolik. Somebody must know - there are little piano flourishes and intervals which might be classed as being in the mold of.... Mozart? Whether or not it's based on an actual piece, or just done "in the style of", well, again, I don't know. Is it like Mozart? It's about time Bill McCrum weighed in - "Gentlemen, nobody is using historical perspective here. The minuet form is often mistakenly attributed to..."

Horner paraphrases Schubert's Trout Quintet. Natalie Wood's character is seem playing it early in the film. Does he? I'm not overly familiar with every note of BRAINSTORM nor Schubert's Trout, but the Trout which Natalie Wood is seen performing (the film's on YT - about 11 minutes in) isn't the same music as the track we're talking about. At least I don't think it is. I agree with the previous post by jb, that it's more "faux Mozart", but I'm willing to learn.

Back when I was in music school(Never mind how long ago!), one of our assignments was to continue a musical phrase of Mozart's... I still remember the passage and the one I came up with, so if a fucking MORON like ME can do it, a talented composer like Horner was could do it in his sleep!

moolik, if you're looking in, it might be an idea to change the title of the thread. If you make it more specific, people who might know the answer to your question will click on. Otherwise they may just pass it by, thinking that it's just another thread about the score in general. The erudite folks who may give you a lead don't have to be Horner fans, and they'll be skipping this thread.
