HOLLYWOOD IN VIENNA:
THE WORLD OF JAMES HORNER
Varèse Sarabande Blu-ray
Coming June, 2016

On June 22 it will have been one year since we lost James Horner in a tragic plane crash. It was an unimaginable loss. A brilliant composer with a legendary career, so busy and so vital to his film music community, lost so suddenly. There was a profound and deeply felt grief that was shared by so many. An excerpt from the Facebook text I wrote expressing my own sadness that terrible evening:

“James was embracing and beginning a whole new chapter of his musical life — concert music composition and live performance. I cherish the time and opportunity I had with him at Hollywood In Vienna in 2013. I conducted a symposium for one hour and twenty minutes, discussing James’ memories of certain films and the creative process of composing. James teared up three times during our talk and he told me that the concert tribute to him there was the first time he had heard his film music in a concert hall. The whole trip to Vienna was a very emotional experience for James, who had a special tie to the city through his father, who spent his youth there. The event was something of a pilgrimage for James. It was an honor to speak with him and an absolute joy to sit three seats from him and watch him enjoy a concert of highlights of his life’s work. The concert was brilliantly conducted by David Newman.”

In the following days I heard from so many people who found so much solace in seeing photos and footage of this concert, and this made a great impression on me. I knew that this was a concert that had to be shared and had to be available to James’ fans around the world. And now it is!

Coming in June will be Varèse Sarabande’s first Blu-ray release

Hollywood In Vienna: The World of James Horner

A deluxe presentation in every way.

The Blu-ray includes:

- The complete concert in HD and DTS 5.1 surround sound

- The 75-minute symposium I conducted with James

- A 32-page full color booklet with notes and photos on the whole historic and very moving celebration of James Horner in Vienna

The program included music from James’ most-loved scores including Avatar, Titanic, Braveheart, Willow, The Rocketeer, An American Tail, A Beautiful Mind and many more. I am so happy to finally be able to share the images, the memories and the music that I have cherished myself, so much over the last year. In memory of James, and for his countless fans all over the world… Hollywood In Vienna: The World of James Horner – A Varèse Sarabande Blu-ray. – Robert Townson

Fantastic news! I had been hoping someone would get around to releasing this. And in HD no less. Many, many thanks Mr Townson and Varese!

I was there, sitting just a couple of rows behind Horner himself.

I'll buy this.

Cool, but what about the first part of the concert (with AI or ID4 for instance)?

You can find the concert on youtube (97mn) and you can delete 5 or 10 mn with the austrian host... it misses something. And Varese talks about the complete Horner concert not the concert itself.
I will buy it anyway... but I am still wondering about the 1st part.

This is so great that this wonderful concert is coming to Bluray. I had seen the show on a Lufthansa flight last year and I was hoping I could see it again.

Amazon says it willl be NTSC format (region 1) but does anyone know if there also will be a PAL release (region 2) so we can see this in Europe also? I really want to buy this.

Not sure if you're aware, but PAL and NTSC are largely irrelevant in the HD world.

If you have a Blu-ray player and an HD television, then PAL / NTSC only applies to SD (standard definition) content on a Blu-ray disc, which only occurred in the earlier days of Blu-ray where they ported over DVD extras onto a Blu-ray release of the same title... they seem to get around that by encoding the same SD content in HD now (the new 20th anniversary Independence Day Blu-ray being a current example of this)

The concern you have is strictly a Standard-def leftover from the DVD / VHS days because of the difference in frame rates (29.97 fps for NTSC 480i / 480p standard definition, 25 fps for PAL 576 i/p standard definition)

High definition content (for Blu-ray) is 1080p / 24 fps (or 23.976) with some exceptions depending on the source material.

The real question / concern you should have is the disc region locked:

Region A
The Americas and their dependencies, Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia; excludes instances that fall under Region C

Region B
Africa, Middle East, Southwest Asia, most of Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and their dependencies; excludes instances that fall under Region C

Region C
Central Asia, mainland China, Mongolia, South Asia, Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Moldova, and the aforementioned regions' dependencies

Many discs are now encoded either region-free or all regions (ABC)

It'll likely be either 1080P / 24, 1080P / 30 or 1080i / 60.

I didn't see any indication whether it would be region locked, but most major studios don't do that any more.

Cool, but what about the first part of the concert (with AI or ID4 for instance)?

I was wondering that as well. Obviously not singularly dedicated to James Horner's work but perhaps simply, as titled, a night of "Hollywood in Vienna" so other works were included but with emphasis on Horner. That's my guess. I'm curious, however, how the other tracks were selected.

Either way, I cannot WAIT to get this. This truly is a gem and a masterpiece and my gratitude for this release, and the behind the scenes efforts that went into it, cannot be adequately expressed.
