Junkie XL is listed on IMDB as the composer (I know that anyone can add credits over there).

Do you think that this is correct or did someone just add him to the credits just for the sake of it or something?

I think they might have added it just to piss me off some more.
First, it's Akiva Goldsman running the show.
Then they cast Idris Elba as white gunslinger Roland Deschain (nothing against him personally but for me, it will mess up his relationship with the black character Susannah, as it was in the books).
If this turns out to be true, I'm not goin'...simple as.

Ah, for f...s sake... The Dark Tower doesn't need foghorns and pounding drums. I don't mind Idris Elba as Roland but I sure as hell would mind JXL as the composer. Imagine what Christopher Young or Marco Beltrami could do with this franchise.

Someone wants Junkie to score everything real hard.

Ha, ha....at this point, I think even just mentioning the name 'Junkie XL' creates havoc around here. big grin

Personally, I've always been a fan of his -- since way before he started doing film scores -- and think he's shown his versatility on several occasions now. Tracks like "Many Mothers" from MAD MAX shows he can do fairly traditional stuff too.

Embarrasingly, I haven't read any of the DARK TOWER books, despite being a huge Stephen King fan, so I have no particular preference in terms of musical style. But if JXL really is attached to this, I'm guessing they're going for a Ramin Djawadi/GAME OF THRONES vibe, which isn't that bad.

Time will show.

Artists with cutey names, ugh, annoying.
The only one the gets a pass on that is Prince, and that was his actual name.

Zimer seems as enamored by him as Junkie XL does his electronic quipment on his Twitter feed; every few posts it's (my parody):

"Fuck yeah, look at this cool stuff -- how awsome am I for owning it?"
"Man, this thing is so big, however I going to shove it in with the rest of my awsome stuff?"
"Cool, got more awsome stuff, look at this photo!"

I've got nothing against Junkie XL but this also doesn't seem like a movie that calls for his style. I've been wrong before though, and I'm sure other people said the same thing 'bout Danny Elfman signing onto Batman back in 1989.

Perhaps, LeHah...perhaps.
Although personally, I can't help but think that Elfman still has more potential in him now (after 30 years in the biz) than Mr Extra Large has in total.
These new kids on the block are so enamoured of their gadgets and toys, they're not using the most important tool they possess...or they're not capable.

I think this thread has inspired me to do a JXL appreciation thread soon.

The should have went for this in 2011 (?) when Ron Howard was to direct and Viggo Mortensen to star as Roland. Imagine if Howard were to have gotten Horner to come aboard. Right now with Nikolaj Arcel to direct and the black James Bond to play Roland (ffs why?) I'm a lot less excited. Junkie XL's score for Mad Max worked given that movie required little thematic material, I have my doubts anything memorable will come from him taking on The Dark Tower.

Ha, ha....indeed.

I guess it's more because I'm a huge electronica fan, and although much of JXL's non-film work has been a little too pop- or rock-oriented (I prefer more hardcore stuff, like psytrance and goa), he has some smokin' good tracks on his albums from the late 90s onwards. I'll write more about it in my tribute thread.

His Mad Max score to me was thrilling and really drove the movie along, but I'm not enamoured by some of his other scores that I've heard recently. Dark tower will require a broad musical canvas and I don't think Tom Holkenborg would deliver anything new. Whoever the producers finally choose will probably differ from who we would like to see as is often the case. Fingers crossed they will choose wisely.

I think it is safe to say that Junkie XL will score this, he has re-tweeted stuff from The Dark Tower's official Twitter account, scroll back to 28th april on his Twitter account and you will see: https://twitter.com/Junkie_XL

I find it hard to believe that he would re-tweet stuff from The Dark Tower's official Twitter account just like that if he wasn't doing it.
