I'm enjoying SAILOR immensely. Nobody could do a langorous, late afternoon kind of romanticism quite like Mandel. Thank you, Bruce.

Glad to hear that folks are enjoying it. I was taken aback by how many people here simply had no interest in a score by Johnny Mandel from a time when he was writing some of the best film music EVER.

Large portions of this score really remind me of all those dreamy/tinkly/vibey tracks John Williams has done in numerous scores of his (things like Man Who Loved Cat Dancing, Paper Chase, Presumed Innocent, Far & Away, Heartbeeps).
It's such an atmospheric score..quite alien at times (not having seen the film, that's the feeling I get).
Then, in track 7, we get the lovely Sea Dream theme introduced, which anchors the score somewhat.
I'm really enjoying getting to know this wonderful score.

I've been enjoying this score a lot, and have played it many times since receiving it. I'm especially fond of the melody. Portions of it, especially when played on the piano, remind me of a song from 1985 called "The Captain of Her Heart," and I wonder if the writers of that song were influenced by this score.
There is an awesome moment during the "End Titles" where the clarinet begins to play the melody heard throughout the score, and it is just beautiful. Here again I wonder if the composer for "Mad Men," David Carbonara, may have been influenced by Mandel or this score. The part of the end titles music I mentioned could have fit right into "Mad Men" quite easily.
I recommend this score to anyone!

This is also a case where the length of the album, although brief, is just about perfect.

Wonderful, soul-searching stuff.

And yet all the opt-outs and no-sales dont seem to have sped up my delivery. I dunno how someone in the Netherregions got it before everyone else.

This is a nice mid-seventies companion to scores like The Yakuza and Marathon Man, though sweeter-natured than the latter. A mix of the elegant and beautiful and disturbing. The most minimal electric piano I remember ever hearing (not minimalist, just spare).

Also might be an enjoyable album for lovers of Joe Hisaishi's music for Miyazaki films.

My copy arrived over this past weekend, and I'm lovin' it and played it around 5 times already.

The album credits are about as sparse as the music program, though. wink

If Kritzerland is at liberty to disclose more information surrounding the release of Mandel's Sailor, then some of us FSMers would be grateful for this additional data.

Regarding the Polydor LP, no acknowledgement of this is mentioned in the CD booklet yet the LP program is apparently the only source available since there's no additional music culled from any other source.
Is it known where & when Mandel recorded the sessions? Was this recorded in the UK and did it take place during late 1975 or early '76?
If Sailor was made possible via new working relationships with current holding companies, then why wasn't Polydor the copyright holder/licensor? What exactly is "The Sailor Company"?
Was a new entity created in order for this music to get re-issued onto digital media?

Any light shed on this Sea is Gracefully appreciated. smile

I've just bought a copy of this beautiful "dream like" score by Johnny Mandel.
Never seen the film...must get the DVD !
Thanks to everyone on here for recommending it, and to Kritzerland for releasing such a gem !

Leo.

It was recorded in the UK in early ‘76. Bobby Richards and Larry Ashmore orchestrated, Bobby Richards and his wife were the copyists. That’s all I know.

Thank you for the bit of intel, neumation.

I adore this score & strange film. Wish a UHD release would cleanse the sins of every video release I've encountered.

This film deserves better!

Kudos to the Kimmel for getting it onto disc.
