I would agree with this, but hear it as a debit rather than credit. I never cared for "Thief", and you've put your finger on why. It's a score I just don't hear much of the 'Rozsa Sound' in at all.

Rozsa was obviously still developing his style at the time of THIEF and I recall being distinctly disappointed back in the 1970s when I first heard the music on the Bernstein conducted Warner Bros LP (which I bought from a certain Mr Fitzpatrick from a shop in Manchester!) having previously only been familiar with the "big sound" Rozsa at that time. However I learnt to appreciate the score over time and what the score lacks in terms of "mature" Rozsa, makes up for it through sheer inventiveness and light-heartedness - which the excellent Tadlow recording reveals splendidly.
