I could have sworn there was a thread for this and a discussion but search isn't finding anything. New Burton film, scored by Mike Higham and Matthew Margeson.

Too bad about Elfman, would have loved to hear what he could do with this.

Film itself looks up Burton's alley. Maybe it'll be okay.

I'd like to know what's happened for the non-involvement from Elfman.
Another fall-out like what happened prior to Ed Wood, or an amicable/some reason 'can't do' like Bridge Of Spies for Spielberg/Williams?

That was the impression I got.

We've only seen one sentence on this from Elfman:

"So you’ve got a big year coming up. Goosebumps, which obviously is already done, the new Tim Burton film-
I’m not doing that [Mrs Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children]."

To read anything into that would be presumptuous. Elfman does have quite a busy schedule.

How could the interviewer NOT follow-up on that with a 'oh, how come?'
Then again, maybe he did and it was met with a NO COMMENT or some ice.

My impression wasn't from that interview, it's that Elfman was on board until the movie's release date was shifted, at which point it shifted to a maybe and then a no. It's possible there was some bad blood there, but it just sounds more likely without more information that there was a timing/scheduling issue when the movie was delayed.

We can only hope they can patch things up again for Mars Attacks! 2!

The movie was on Elfman's agency website for a while but when the movie changed release date it was removed. The score for Miss Peregrine was recorded a week after the score to Alice 2 - there was clearly a clash.

While there may have been a conflict, when the score was recorded doesn't indicate that. The film doesn't open until September -- that's plenty of time to write and record if Elfman wasnted to. I only see three films on his IMDb page for 2016 and all are recorded.

Elfman's has a violin concerto which premieres this summer.

Besides, just because the movie opens in September doesn't mean the movie won't be finished long before then. That's exactly what happened with Bridge of Spies, Spielberg had a certain window that Williams couldn't fit into - it had to be then because Spielberg needed to move on. Given that the movie finished shooting last summer I'd say that sounds likely.

Also, Mike Highman has worked with Elfman before.

Saw the film a few days ago. Seems like Burton asked the composers to deliver an Efmanesque score and they did it very well. Orchestral, gothic, magical, very melodic, there is also a track which sounds A LOT like Goldsmith's POLTERGEIST, even is sometimes you have some typical RCP rythms-but not so much-and an annoying techno/dance track-but I'm not sure it's from Wigham and Margeson. It also reminds me Stephen Trask's THE VAMPIRE'S ASSISTANT in some places. I guess it will make a very enjoyable album.

Just saw this film in the UK. IMO a poor offering from Burton. But the score was another matter.

I think you nailed it on the head; "Orchestral, gothic, magical, very melodic".

Anyone know when the *score* is going to be released (not the soundtrack cd of the songs)?

Thanks for the info.

I live in the UK. It appears not to be listed on Amazon.uk unless I am missing something.

Strange?

Just came back from the press screening here in Norway (has it premiered worldwide yet?).

A sweet film filled with many highlights, but also some 5-6 warts which has been the standard for Burton ever since after the marvelous BIG FISH. The warts include wooden acting (or possibly stale direction from Burton), a lack of energy in the first 2/3rds, a bit whimsical plot, some radical tone shifts (including an over-the-top finale) and -- yes -- the music. I'm a big fan of Margeson, especially after his stunning EDDIE THE EAGLE earlier this year, but except for a few Elfman-ian elements (celeste, female voices, organ), it's far more conventional, relying on the ubiquitous ostinati and typical contemporary Hollywood action/suspense tropes. But loved the electronic celeste for the 'loop' areas. Maybe it works better on album, we'll see.

On the plus side is a reliance on character interaction and less on CGI spectacle, a more subtle incorporation of Burton elements (like twisted figures, burlesque situations, play with dark and shadow, contrast between monochrome and stale everyday images etc.). Also some stunning static shots that I've never seen in Burton films before.

So variable in quality, but overall I would place it in the upper echelon of Burton film post-BIG FISH.
