VARÈSE SARABANDE RECORDS TO RELEASE
EDDIE THE EAGLE – ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SCORE

Featuring Original Music Composed By Matthew Margeson

(March 1, 2016 – Los Angeles, CA) – Varèse Sarabande will release the EDDIE THE EAGLE – Original Score Album digitally on March 11 and on CD March 25, 2016. The album features the original music composed by Matthew Margeson (SCOUTS GUIDE TO THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE, KICK-ASS 2).

“We wanted to create a period score for Eddie,” Margeson described. “The film is set in the ‘80s and the goal was to create a throwback ‘80s score. I knew it was going to be a fun task from the get-go and it was.”

Inspired by true events, EDDIE THE EAGLE is a feel-good story about Michael “Eddie” Edwards (Taron Egerton), an unlikely but courageous British ski-jumper who never stopped believing in himself – even as an entire nation was counting him out. With the help of a rebellious and charismatic coach (played by Hugh Jackman), Eddie takes on the establishment and wins the hearts of sports fans around the world by making an improbable and historic showing at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics.

“I ended up going on craigslist and eBay and getting a bunch of old digital synthesizers from the time period,” said Margeson. “I played all of the keyboards, and did the programming of the synths myself. We did have some guitar and bass players, and some live woodwinds for a few of the emotional moments.”

Matthew Margeson is an American composer who has contributed music to some of the most memorable films of the last 10 years, including Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009), X-Men: First Class (2011), Wreck-It Ralph (2012), Captain Phillips (2013), Into The Woods (2014), Kick-Ass (2010) & Kick-Ass 2 (2013), Fox’s smash hit Kingsman: The Secret Service (2015), and Paramount’s Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (2015).

The score for his first studio feature, Universal’s Skyline (2010), led to a nomination for the BSOSPIRIT Revelation Composer Award at the Úbeda Film Music Festival. Multi-talented and versatile, Margeson has also worked on a variety of successful television series and video games, including HBO’s EASTBOUND AND DOWN, and Sony Playstation’s ALL-STAR BATTLE ROYALE and KNACK. His music can also be heard on both the Universal Studios and Warner Brothers backlot tram tours. Margeson is currently composing the score for Tim Burton’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiars.

20th Century Fox presents EDDIE THE EAGLE in theaters now. Varèse Sarabande will release the EDDIE THE EAGLE – Original Score Album digitally on March 11 and on CD March 25, 2016.

Off topic and I'm really sorry to vent, but the composer's biography is wildly depressing. How many composers come up through this ghost-writing nonsense thing on big soulless movies?

Are any of them ever going to break this chain of madness and creative bankruptcy?

Bleak, bleak, BLEAK.

I loved the movie and really enjoyed the 80's throwback score. I look forward to getting this one when it comes out!

It looks like a fun film, will have to check out the samples...

Go Calgary... even though most of the film was done in Germany :-)

I've been loving EDDIE as it has a way of bringing the spirit of 80's Grusin to mind. Gonna have to keep an eye on Margeson's future work.

Margeson's score for SKYLINE was forgettable though.

Whoops - what is this greatness? Totally overlooked by me, now I´m hooked.

Yes, I´m a child of the 80´s. So I may be biased to this kind of score.

Still, lots of fun. One of those uplifting, inspiring sport movie-scores that keeps you punching the air. Check it out!

Having listened through the CD twice, I must say that this score is a mixture of the reflective and quiet beauty of Horners Field Of Dreams and the power of Zimmers Days Of Thunder, actually down to the exact same chord changes. Among other influences, of course.

Maybe 10 minutes of the 55 minute running time could have been deleted, but thats a minor quibble.

All in all s superb and highly refreshing score.

EDDIE THE EAGLE has been superseded by Cliff Martinez' THE NEON DEMON as my favourite of the year so far, but I think it's guaranteed at least a Top 10, no matter what comes out. Probably a Top 3.

Got around to seeing this and this is a great movie and the score is fantastic. Yes, it has some similarities to Days of Thunder but it works perfectly within the film. I only wish the score album had the final mix of the finale from the film with the choir added.

Been hooked on this score for weeks since seeing the movie. It's perfect. I actually hear Vangelis and a bit of JG's Hoosiers influence in it, which makes it all the better. Great stuff!
