Maybe they realized that the film studios, not Herrmann, own the vast majority of the masters to his recordings?

Spitfire Audio is a British orchestral sampling library developer. From the initial press release over a year ago, it looked like they were developing a new sample library that features the "sound" of Herrmann. This could mean offering specific types of groups of orchestral instruments, playing techniques, FX, etc that would be synonymous to Herrmann's "sound". It's ambitious but also hard to get my head around what it will actually sound like once released.

I've been in contact with the Spitfire folks and offered to do a product review for FSM so we shall see soon enough what it's all about.

I own a fair bit of their libraries and have to say that they found a way of making their samples sound very organic and real. It's not too difficult making their sounds sing- well, that is if you know what you are doing....

The "Project" revealed. Now you can make your music sound like Bernard Herrmann for a mere $399:

Andy Blaney's demo for the new Herrmann library by Spitfire is extraordinary.

Love his use of expanded harmonies and the shift between instrumentation and sections. Sounds really authentic rather than a sample library. It sounds real!

That's amazing. I would never guess it wasn't a live orchestra. In fact, I'd probably be certain it was live if I didn't know otherwise.

The Blaney cut sounds more like Elfman in a Herrmann mood.

I think the idea is to achieve a certain sound but not be constrained to think compisktonslly only like Herrmann. It's amazing to see how this library is getting younger composers to check out Herrmann more and open themselves up to broader harmonic tapestries. I'm pleasantly surprised at the response the library has gardnered.

I'm still very intrigued as to that clip from the original Psycho recordings. Is it possible that the original tapes are held by the Herrmann estate? Since Stylotone was working with them, I wonder if that could be (or could have been) a potential release. As others on the Marnie thread have said, not much has been going on with that label since they announced the 4 track EP of that score.
