Just received the DVD of this movie and it has a terrific Alex North score. There are two logos on the box, MGM and Fox, so I'm not sure who released the film. Just wondering if anybody has ever checked into a possibility of a release of the score.

The music for the burning saloon is a close prototype of the gladiator fight from SPARTACUS, so that cue, at least, is available.

Thanks, Les, I didn't know that.
It must be a fairly obscure western since few have commented on it. It is a very adult, dark film.

Here here! I just watched it for the first time as well. Fine North score - and the 'Gladiator Fight' precursor is so dead on that a few people I was watching it with who are not particularly musical noticed it as well.

MAN WITH THE GUN was originally released by United Artists, so it is now owned by MGM. Fox is the current distributor of MGM videos.

MAN WITH THE GUN marked the producing debut of Samuel Goldwyn, Jr., son of the renowned film producer. The picture also marked the directorial debut of writer Richard Wilson, who had previously worked as a film writer and producer. Wilson was under contract to Universal-International at the time of production.

Here's a sampling. That's definitely an Alex North Main Title!

Yes, the Saloon fire sequence at 1:02:05 is a great example of North writing music for one film and then later in another film, using it again, with little changes but basically the same piece. He was doing Horner before Horner did Horner! God Bless them both, cause it always worked and it was always great!

Dang, a man shooting a dog in the first 3 minutes of the movie. Now that bastard must die!

I'm going to float the suggestion that you put the info above in "spoiler" code, as I did, Zooba. I think it would be nicer for anyone who isn't familiar with the film (unless, of course, the character spent the first 2:59 talking about killing a dog.)

Nice! I've been on a North kick lately, and it's been too long between North releases. (Yes, I enjoyed "Carny" this year. Yes, I know his music is a tough sell to most.) Maybe someday…

You are right. I have amended. Thanks David.

This was good. It was nice to hear North's "take" on an "Americana"-style main theme, and to hear so much North music, too!

I hope there's a label out there looking into this!

(Thanks Zooba, for that link! smile )
