Beautifully done, Jim. How fitting to incorporate humor into a sad news item; I'm sure Mr. Elliott would have smiled in approval...

peace,

Preston

PS: FWIW, if you can find a copy, I highly recommend the recordings BOB AND RAY ON A PLATTER and BOB AND RAY: THE TWO AND ONLY.

In Norman Lear's 1971 comedy COLD TURKEY, Bob Elliott and Ray Goulding's opening onscreen credit reads "Bob and Ray," which was the name of their comedy act. The team marked their feature film debut in COLD TURKEY impersonating several contemporary television news reporters, using slightly altered names. In his portrayal of "Walter Chronic," Goulding parodied Walter Cronkite, the highly respected newsman who anchored The CBS Evening News from 1961 until his retirement in 1981. The character “David Chetley,” portrayed by Elliott, was a parody of the news team David Brinkley and Chet Huntley of the The Huntley-Brinkley Report , which aired on NBC from 1956 until 1970. During the film, both Bob and Ray are sometimes depicted with “halos” created by positioning the actors under a round florescent light or surrounded by rays from the sunlight.

COLD TURKEY marked the feature film scoring debut of Randy Newman. His score was released by Percepto in 2007.

Although it seems out of character, the IMDB says that Bob Elliott appeared in a little-seen 1980 thriller called SCREAM FOR VENGEANCE!. He supposedly played one of four jewelry store robbers. Reportedly, Elliott's character turns out to be a sexual pervert who molests and rapes the jeweler's daughter, and then, with his cohorts, takes a young female student hostage.

In 1982's AUTHOR! AUTHOR!, Al Pacino is Broadway playwright "Ivan Travalian." Bob and Ray play two financial backers, "Patrick and Jackie Dicker," who discuss with Ivan their contribution of $1.3 million and the casting of the show’s lead, film star "Alice Detroit" (Dyan Cannon). Arthur Hiller directed the comedy. Dave Grusin's score (and Johnny Mandel's rejected one) were released by Varese Sarabande in 2007.

If you love radio like I do B& R are as good as it gets. Totally original and hilarious.

Try and find the incredible series they did where a local small town planning board approves a 50 story skyscraper and the head commissioner speaks like Sen. Joseph Mccarthy!!!

also great: the desperate for anyone to interview routine they did for the Apollo launches

rip BOB

Elliott had a bit part as a policeman in the 1984 family comedy KIDCO. Ron Maxwell (GETTYSBURG) directed the film. Michael Small's score was released by Intrada in 2011.

Elliott's last feature film role was in the 1994 comedy CABIN BOY, which starred his son Chris. Adam Resnick directed (his first feature). Steve Bartek's score has not been released.

Not counting Bob D. and his customary filmography, so far there's only three of us here who knew and cared about Bob & Ray. What does that say about the general FSM membership, I wonder? Just asking.

Not so, dear Preston. I've always loved Bob and Ray since their early days as "Bert and Harry Piel" in their beer commercials from the mid-50s. (see example below) Funny stuff which sold a lot of beer for an off brand label. Of course I was much too young to partake at the time smile

Bob and Ray had several records as well. Here's one of my favorites with a great RCA "Living Stereo"LP jacket by Jack Davis of MAD fame:
