Just finished watching both of them. I don't think any of our beloved labels would go as far as releasing scores to any of the above mentioned movies. I actually did enjoy some of the fragments from 'Showgirls' score. There's certainly a lack of releases in Erotica department, if you ask me. Poison Ivy, another great score also comes to mind.

Was Goldsmith (or Poledouris for that matter) ever considered for Showgirls?

As for Striptease, maybe it could be a double bill with Shore's other erotica score, Sliver

SHOWGIRLS is one of the most underrated films of all time; a masterful piece of subversive cinema that was slaughtered for all the predictable reasons. STRIPTEASE isn't quite on the same level. I have no memory of either score, though. But yeah -- good idea for a double bill.

Two in one? Hmm...how fiendishly clever.

I agree, it isn't nearly as bad as it has been made out to be. Certainly over the top, at times wonderfully ridiculous, very well made and a lot of fun.

Concur. 21 years after its release, “Showgirls” remains the greatest piece of American pop trash as deliberate mugging. It’s misogynist upchuck with a twist — Elizabeth Berkley’s stripper takes no prisoners. She’s a G.E.D. version of ice picker Sharon Stone in “Basic Instincts” but totally void of faux mystery. And without limits: no American actress I can think of has bared all with more audacity — she’s a one-woman titstacular as a graphic comic book. Throw in Gina Gershon as Cobra Woman and it becomes clear that no dirty-minded screenwriter gets his slobby kicks from lesbian sex more than Joe Eszterhas, and one look at him is the scurrilous excuse, yet there’s no denying he satisfies a hunger for the down low. He and director Paul Verhoeven aren’t quite Hustler magazine but they concoct a fantasy that equals the sleazy turn-ons in the old Bob Guccione Forum.

Having been underwhelmed by Basic Instinct and unconvinced by the "But Starship Troopers is actually a brilliant satire!" crowd, I'm not falling for that line again. I shall continue to live happily without sitting through Showgirls.

Fair enough, but you're missing out. And the satire in STARSHIP TROOPERS (one of the best films of the 90s!) isn't exactly subtle -- it's fairly in-your-face! Whether you like it or not, though, is of course another issue and entirely up to you.

Never saw either. In fact I didn't even know they were two different films. I do remember the Showgirls director saying the only way he could avoid an "X" rating (or was it NC 17 by then?) was by adding some graphic violence. LOL

I remember seeing both those films in the 90s. Particularly Showgirls had some enormously hot girls in it...

Not a fan of the scores, though.

One of the most entertaining movies ever made. Outrageous, silly, and fun! :-)

You have, at least, had the pleasure of ROBOCOP, right?

Showgirls is one of the greatest comedies of all time. Elizabeth Berkley is a friggin' riot!

Thank you! I'm in the don't-like "Starship Troopers" camp (just my opinion), and have always been mystified by the "You didn't get the satire!" retort. Could it be more obvious?

Coming out of the theater after seeing Showgirls in 1995 I said to my companion, "Just wait - in twenty years people will be all over this saying it's brilliant - wait and see." My companion laughed at me and said it would never happen.

And here we are. smile

Subversive cinema? Someone's been reading too many film books. smile

Knowing people involved, I can assure you no one thought they were making camp, subversive cinema, or any other terms you'd like to ascribe to this film. They thought they were making a hit movie, that's what they thought.

You know what they say, fascists have no sense of humor and so satire goes right over their heads! ;-)
