A person could go crazy trying to get their head around the many and subtle changes that exist between these two versions of the score. Yes, you can hear many of the obvious edits in things like the Jakku opening, I Can Fly Anything, the shortened Rebel March in the end credits, but some of it can be quite bewildering. How come the Rey Meets BB8 music is at the end of the FYC? Why do the two versions of On The Inside sound so different. Scherzo For X-Wings is a concert version on the regular release, yes? Where is the Maz music on the FYC? Or the Han & Leia quotes? I love both versions (and the sound is surprisingly decent for a FYC), but my brain hurts. Listening to scores ain't supposed to be this tough!!!
Aren't "The Resistance" and "The Bombing Run" Just incredible tracks?!?
I believe the Oscar nomination rules stipulate that to be considered, a score has to be made up of a certain percentage of new music. I think the FYC reflects this by focusing on the newer material. So that means Han and Leia and the Main Title get the chop. (I'm assuming)
Yes, they are indeed great tracks. I also love 'Do You Have A Name?', from when the Falcon lands on Maz's planet and Han is chatting with Rey. I noticed that cue the second time I watched the film and was glad it was on the FYC.
Kev - you've made me realise a connection that I believe was hitherto unrecognised. The Royal Albert Hall, long the UK's premier venue for concert music, has a London SW7 postcode!
I'd imagine either ScoringSessions will be posting something from the TFA sessions (more likely IMO), or they'll be on the floor for Desplat's Rogue One sessions later this year.
With most of Williams' recent works I just enjoy the original version because they always sound fantastic and contain the majority of the music from the films in a format that is highly enjoyable. I especially love the concert suites that he used for the album for this latest Star Wars. I'm all for film versions in some cases but it seems highly unnecessary here.
