Another show with a confusing conspiracy within a conspiracy within a conspiracy. You would think THE X-FILES would have learned a lesson from LOST.
To their benefit, X-Files was at least a good show for the majority of its run. Lost always sucked.
The first episode was okay. I missed Mulder explaining things with ropey speeches to connect everything - but the fast paced editing in it was seriously off-putting. TXF was always a slow burn type of show, always took its time with mood and this seemed to be assembled by a couple of millennials with ADHD and too much coffee.

I thought the first episode was typically hobbled by one Mr. Chris Carter. Yo, "Scullder," break the rigor mortis out of the Alien stiff that is this man's writing and direction?
Fortunately, other talent was invited back into the fold. Good bet things will lighten up, smooth out tomorrow night when James Wong steps in (so sayeth IMDB)...
I'd hoped the show would somehow jump back into action without losing a step, but it was an awkward, stumbling start thanks to the need to quickly play catch up and Carter's mediocre writing in doing so, but it's his baby, and Mulder and Scully are there doing their thing, the show really coming to life when Mulder gets a good conspiratorial rant in and Scully knocks it down in fine form, all while Mark Snow's music creeps along underneath, so it still felt like the genuine article. Just an awkward, underwhelming start. Can't wait for Darin Morgan's episode.
My biggest problem with this show historically was that it alternated between stand-alone episodes and the continuing conspiracy narrative. I think the show would have been better if it took one approach or another.
One of these days, I want to Netflix them from the beginning and watch only the conspiracy narrative shows.
I was just getting ready to post about that very thing.... Are these new episodes all tied together, or are they stand-alone episodes? Oh... and WAS THAT Rance Howard???

Yes, it would appear that it was indeed Rance Howard.
Enjoyed the first one, bring on the rest now thanks...
According to many critics, the new series doesn't really click in until episode three. After watching two episodes I say this with no joy--while it's great to see the band back together, it gives every evidence of falling down the same "conspiracy mythology" rabbit hole the original series did.
But . . . with four shows to go, I am forever optimistic.
The first episode was good, but the second one was significantly better. I'll chalk it up to James Wong writing and directing "Founder's Mutation." Next week's episode is written/directed by somebody else, I believe.
So good to see DD out of the truly horrible CALIFORNICATION and back where he belongs (i even like the fact that he looks so old & haggard!) same goes for GA - out of THE FALL (ugh!) and back on the case
