The premiere episode was a complete waste of time. I won't be watching that ever again. The score is complete unremarkable, even bad. There's not a single cue I need from that episode. Overall, it was just badly done. And there's no excuse for it. It's not like it was a rush to make. Carter has had a good deal of time. With trepidation I'll try the second episode.

Ok, wow. What can I say. Nice to have the show and characters back, but what the heck was that. The first episode was... all over the place. I've been watching some of the early episodes, and sure, a lot of the mythology episodes are clunky, but nothing like this. It was like CC had watched all of the Jesse Ventura conspiracy shows for research, and just included a hodge-podge of the Greatest Conspiracy hits from recent years. And Mulder suddenly "figures it all out" and gives a rambling nonsensical monologue spelling it all out. WTF? I guess he just looked it up online and decided it's true? Because he doesn't have any evidence of anything. Did I miss something? And the way Scully lied about that certain test... WHAT? The second episode was better, because it relied more on M&S working a case, and not rambling about nonsensical things they had no evidence of. Nothing from the score really stood out, have to watch it again to have a better listen. It's a shame they didn't update the theme music and opening titles. I rather like shows to change it up every once in a while, like Babylon 5 which changed it every year. It's been a while, so it would've been a nice way of saying "it's a new era". At least they changed the end credits music.

The third episode was brilliant. Classic Darin Morgan. It's ridiculous how much better he is as a writer than Chris Carter (based on the awfulness and awkwardness of the opening episode). Having just one Darin Morgan episode per year would be reason enough to revive the show. CC had his moments with some good episodes in the past, but maybe he's lost his mojo (remains to be seen, maybe he'll pull a rabbit out of the hat with his remaining episodes). Darin Morgan hasn't, he's like a powerhouse that swept through the old show in the second and third seasons, leaving his mark on the show. Hopefully his example makes the other writers pick up their game this time as well, if we see further seasons. Duchovny and Anderson seemed to have a lot more fun with this episode, and woke up from their zombie-like states. Strange what a difference a good script makes for the actors. Mark Snow also had some more chances with this episode to liven up the score, with some horror & comedy cues. If there's a score release for this season, these cues would probably be among the highlights.
