It has taken a longer time than I had originally thought, but the new Saimel CD with the complete score of Piero Piccioni's LA VIACCIA has now finally been slated for an end of January release on the Spanish Rosebud website:
http://www.rosebudbandasonora.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=21189

Unreleased till now, this remarkable score from 1961 has always been the missing link between IL BELL'ANTONIO (1960) and SENILITÀ (1962) which together form kind of a Mauro Bolognini/Claudia Cardinale/Piero Piccioni triptych.
The first part of the CD contains all tracks which have been specifically composed by Piccioni for this film whereas during the second half of the CD you will find some alternate and unused tracks as well as the complete Debussy piece "Rhapsody for Saxophone and Orchestra" (conducted here by Franco Ferrara) of which short snippets were used throughout the film.
For some tracks in the main program (track 1-19 on the CD) Piccioni also made some kind of adaptation of parts of the Debussy work with slightly different instrumentation, several added bars or a completely different editing. These tracks in the main program are therefore always marked with an asterisk.
I have written the complete liner notes for this new CD which you can read here:

Many thanks for this announcement Stefan. I have read your notes, most interesting and informative, as always! This great Piccioni release will be a definite purchase for me!

Wow!! Wonderful. I was going to post on the Piccioni thread wondering if we had any new releases this year.

I know Digitmovies will also soon (re-)release a Piccioni soundtrack previously only available on the Avanz label.

So this is the project Stefan has been working with Saimel on.
I recall Stefan mentioning a forthcoming Piccioni on Saimel, but it seemed like it wasn't happening.

Pleasant news - an early '60s Piccioni title to help fill in one of the gaps that exist in the Piccioni discography.
I myself remember thinking that the Debussy piece would make an ideal companion for this score - and here it is thanks to conductor Franco Ferrara who recorded it at that time.

A very good item with which to start 2016.

(Stefan, can we expect a '61 Lavagnino in February on Alhambra?)

Great to see another Piccioni title on the horizon sounds very interesting from your description Stefan.

Many thanks to Saimel and Stefan and all involved.

Can't wait early 60s and Piccioni YES wink

The strange thing was that, although the 10-minute Debussy Rhapsody seems to have been originally recorded at least once as one piece by Franco Ferrara, on the tapes from Sugar it was divided into three sections which were widely spread over all the tapes and in addition without correct labelings. There were even overlappings among those three tracks. So you had to know the Debussy piece very well because otherwise it would not have been possible to put those three parts together again in the way the complete piece was originally recorded.

Yes, you can, but I don't know yet if it will be really February or rather March.
We will prepone MACISTE CONTRO IL VAMPIRO (GOLIATH AND THE VAMPIRES) now because the mastering for this score has already been finished.
I am just writing the liner notes for this CD. smile

Very interesting project of Saimel. I remember the movie and the music is beautiful. The music holds many parallels with other scores as Senilitá or L' Attico. A great soundtrack that can not miss on the shelf. Stefan magnificent notes. Great announcement Goliath and the Vampires in Alhambra.

Yes, automatic purchase for me as well. I hope that L'Assassino (1961) will get the same treatment soon.

I also wonder why ...dopo di che, uccide il maschio e lo divora (1971), due maschi per alexa (1971), una tomba aperta, una tomba vuota (1972), agente 077 dall'oriente con furore (1965), and lucky luciano (1974) haven't been expanded yet (among others). Maybe time will tell!

Any samples for this? As much as I love Piccioni, I've been burned by a few blind buys.

A good selection of music from La Viaccia. Symphonic music and popular music.

Thanks, SAE & Saimel, for the samples.

To me, La Viaccia seems an ideal companion to the Bell'Antonio album (i.e. Provincial-sounding source cues co-mingling with melancholy orchestral underscore).

La Viaccia is on my wish list regardless (sound samples or no sound samples); I'm even considering buying 2 copies.

I wonder how little or how much 'The Juggler' appreciates such music now it can be heard?

I'm on the fence about purchasing it. I like the melancholic feel of "Bianca's Confession" but the rest of the samples leave me cold. I'm into Piccioni for his moody romanticism and eccentric orchestrations. I'm not really hearing much of that here, although I concede that there may be a lot more of the melancholic writing in the unheard cues.

There is a lot of moody romanticism in the score, but you also have to consider that in contrast to BELL'ANTONIO and SENILITA', much of the music in this movie is filled with short excerpts from the Debussy Rhapsody or with Piccioni's adaptations of parts of this piece. Those adaptations - where the instrumentation has been slightly altered in some parts or a few bars have been added - can be heard for example in the tracks 4,5,7,9,11,18 and 19 on the CD. So it also depends if you like the Debussy Rhapsody for Saxophone and Orchestra or not. And if the more cheerful Piccioni tracks such as the "Valzer di mai" (track 16) are also not quite your cup of tea, then I would say that above all the following tracks in the main program of the CD will appeal to you: 2,3,8,10 and 17.
So you have to keep in mind that all in all this is a score with different musical facets.
