A collection of LB's televised concerts from the Sixties has been issued on dvd by Kultur. I think film music fans will really enjoy this in addition to classical lovers.
I just watched an ep featuring a 16 year old Andre Watts absolutely killing Liszt's Piano Concerto in E-flat. I am still shell-shocked!!!!
btw Lenny sounds an awful lot like Elmer. I believe it is a result of them both being from Boston and trying to disguise their accents (unless they are related?)

First, they are not related. Elmer was from New York City (not Boston) and I think Leonard was also. Leonard pronounced his name bernSTEIN (like the beer glass), Elmer was BernSTEEN. LB said you don't play a STEENway piano. I recall seeing the concerts on Sunday afternoons until football took over.
Fascinating. I'd only heard of these through reading about Michael Kamen who performed with his band The New York Rock And Roll Ensemble in one of these in 1969. Great to actually be able to see this. Mark Snow of course also appears in the band on oboe/drums. Kamen is on oboe/keyboard.
I remember these from when they were first broadcast. The first shot was of "young people," i.e. boys and girls, up to about 15 or so at most, slowly walking upstairs into the entrance of the concert hall. I also recall Bernstein's narration before each piece, explaining it to his audience. At the time, there were more than a few comics who made fun of his vocal style to satirize explaining most anything.
There was more blatant satire back then, without the venom you mostly see in comedy nowadays.
For the record, FSM's very own "Morricone" once gave a shindig in celebration of Elmer, at which party-favors were given out in the form of a glass stein with the composer's face on it. You can guess what they were called...

"Its FRONKenSTEEN not FrankenSTYNE!,". Brm
There is a hilarious story about Beatles manager Brian Epstein meeting concert promoter Sid Bernstein for the first time. Both mispronounced the others name. Lol
