That's one opinion, but this traditional score lover is quite fond of Seventh Son, I Robot, Gods of Egypt, The Snowman, Soul Surfer and xXx: State of the Union.

I like his Die Hard scores a lot too. When he's doing the Goldsmith mixed-meter thing, his action music can be very engaging. I just don't find him to be a particularly good melodist.

Then let me be the voice of dissent (again) and say I've always been a Beltrami fan. I particularly love his sense of 'delicious darkness' -- one of the few composers who can do horror scores I actually like listening to. True, it's been a while since I was blown away by one of his scores -- I'm mostly a fan of his 90s and early 2000s material -- but I always keep an eye out for him.

Listening to this now, and it has a lot of lovely tracks that aren't quite as 'bombastic' as the cue listed earlier. I think I just might keep it.

100% agree with this and what the other posters have stated. Where did the Beltrami that wrote Hellboy go? He's been a composer that has constantly disappointed since then.

I'm beginning to have a sneaking suspicion that Guillermo Del Toro is the sole reason we have ANY music from Beltrami that appeals to we "traditional" score lovers.

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark is another example of where Beltrami (or Sanders) manged to know it out of the park for del Toro. Del Toro does have a canny ability to get the best out of composers. It is a real shame that though that the Beltrami isn't working with Del Toro. I think Beltrami could have picked up his first Oscar for The Shape of Water if they were still working.

Like Tyler, Beltrami is following Goldsmith of the 90s. He's written music for some terrible films (with the old exception of Logan). I think he'd shine if he managed to grab a few tent poles and quality dramas, however with Giacchino and Desplat hoovering up all of those projects it seems unlikely that such an opportunities will arise anytime soon.

After listening to this score off and on all weekend, I really like it. Not sure I love it, yet...but it has enough to keep me coming back for additional listens...so, I have a feeling it will grow on me. Solid score.

I love that "delicious darkness" sound of his too, Thor.

Problem is, he's used it maybe four times in his whole career...
