Does anyone know if the jazz waltz version of "O Christmas Tree/O Tannenbaum" heard in "A Charlie Brown Christmas" ever made it to LP or CD? It is not on the standard soundtrack that was released on LP or CD. I know there have been various Peanuts comps over the years and am wondering if this ever made its way out.

Thanks.

Some of those listings do not contain track titles, and if they do, some do not contain timings, and they certainly don't differentiate between which time signatures the tunes are played in.

This runs it all down-

If it's not here, I don't think anyone knows.

I can recommend the remastered album from 2006- basically, it amounts to actually hearing the other players in the trio.

Thanks, but this site does not reference the fact that the TV version is played as a waltz, and the LP version is in 4/4.

7. "Christmas Is Coming" A
8. "Charlie Brown Theme" B, D, I
9. "Linus and Lucy" A, B, C, D, I, J, L, N, O, Q, R
10. "Charlie Brown Theme" B, D, I

13. "Frieda (with the Naturally Curly Hair)" B, Q
14. "Happiness Is" B
15. "Charlie Brown Theme" B, D, I

21. "Fur Elise" (Beethoven) A

23. "Christmas Time Is Here" (instrumental) A, D, I
24. "Oh, Tannenbaum" (traditional, arranged by Guaraldi) A
25. "Oh, Tannenbaum" (traditional, arranged by Guaraldi) A

27. "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing" ("loo loo" vocal, traditional, arranged by Guaraldi) A
28. "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing" (vocal, traditional, arranged by Guaraldi) A

This breakdown shows that "Oh, Tannenbaum" appears four times in the show. (The "A" after the listings indicates that the only recording on which any version of the song appears is the album for "A Charlie Brown Christmas.")

Are all appearances of the "Tannenbaum" song the waltz version, or are some in other tempos?

I will have to watch the film, but it is mostly the waltz version, and I believe also a rubato solo piano version.

I believe the album recordings are from a different session. The takes are certainly different, but it also sounds like the individual instruments may have been recorded differently.

When "Surfin' Snoopy" eventually made it to CD, it clearly used the TV recording.

According to a Dallas Observer article from December 17, 1998, the album for "A Charlie Brown Christmas" was recorded prior to the creation of the TV special, and in part was the inspiration for it. Since the pre-recorded songs did not always match the timings needed for the subsequent film, Guaraldi brought in different sidemen to re-record some cues. As a result, says the article, "there are perhaps no less than three different bands contributing music to the actual cartoon. But only three musicians perform on the so-called 'original sound track' to the CBS special: Guaraldi, [Fred] Marshall, and [Jerry] Granelli."

A fellow named Doug Anderson has compared the recordings on the LP of "A Charlie Brown Christmas" with the music cues in the special in order to determine which are the same and which are different. The results are presented at the link below. His conclusion is that the LP version of "O Tannenbaum" appears twice in the special, but two other appearances of the song are likely from another performance.

Yes, the other versions would have to be from another performance, as they are in a different time signature.

Thanks for the link!

So glad to see people enjoying the results of my obsessive audio sleuthing! (Yeah, this is the Doug responsible for that cue chart linked above.)

My close examination of the "Charlie Brown Christmas" LP and TV special and the "Boy Named Charlie Brown" LP uncovered some unexpected realizations: (1) Most of the performances on the Charlie Brown Christmas "soundtrack" LP don't actually appear in the TV special; (2) most of the performances used in the TV special are not from the Christmas soundtrack LP; and (3) some of the *songs* on the soundtrack LP do not even appear in the TV special ("What Child is This," "My Little Drum," and "Greensleeves").

If you're interested in any more details or backstory, Derrick did a couple of blog posts on this last year: http://impressionsofvince.blogspot.com/2014/03/the-score-whole-score-and-nothing-but.html

Is there any way we can hear this elusive alternate take of "Linus and Lucy" from the original pressing of the 2006 album?

...some of the *songs* on the soundtrack LP do not even appear in the TV special ("What Child is This," "My Little Drum," and "Greensleeves").

That is pretty obvious. "My Little Drum" is awful. I always leave if off my custom version, adding "Surfin' Snoopy" and "Charlie Brown Theme" instead.

But while the performances are different between the LP and the show, "Tannenbaum" is the only tune that is arranged differently.

That's the one.

I have that original pressing. I got it used a year or two ago and imagine my surprise when I popped it in and not all the tracks were as I've known them forever and a day.

On a side note, wouldn't it be cool if Fantasy Records would put out the music from the Peanuts HALLOWEEN and THANKSGIVING specials on one CD?

I especially always loved the music from A CHARLIE BROWN THANKSGIVING.

Anyway, just a suggestion...:-)

That would be nice, but they still haven't done the Christmas special properly. Even that 2006 release isn't that great sounding. What we need is a label like La La Land Records (assuming they could get the rights) to release a deluxe set of the full score/songs from the special, all those alternate tracks, any other alternate tracks that might be of interest, instrumental-only versions (if possible), and give it a great mastering with today's technology.

Did you ever get the "Lost Cues from the Charlie Brown Television Specials"? There were two volumes. Here's the Thanksgiving Theme:

The only other CD that I have is the PEANUTS HOLIDAY HITS - that's pretty good but would love to get my hands on the full scores to the Halloween & Thanksgiving specials.

BTW, the newest CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS CD that was remastered in 2012 contains THE GREAT PUMPKIN WALTZ & THE THANKSGIVING THEME as bonus tracks - I have this CD and it really does sound wonderful...:-)

Was the version of the Thanksgiving Theme I posted in the link above the original version? It sounds like it to me. I have the 2012 cd and thought that the versions of both the Halloween special and the Thanksgiving special were re-records.
