What do you think about Hans Zimmer's music?

From the early 90's till roughly 2005 he was on fire, the last 10 years he's hit and miss for me.

Agreed!

I was just listening to INCEPTION and found it to be a very interesting listen... it's put together like a "concept album" with all cues flowing into each other and it works very well. It's very much an independent soundscape he creates, yet the album does the music as written for the film justice.

Hans Zimmer is certainly one of the most influential film composers ever, he has done some terrific work. The "problem" with his approach is that it's been copied so often (by lesser composers) and that the "Zimmer" sound has become in certain ways the "only" sound, at least that's how it feels sometimes.
But Hans Zimmer himself has done some original and interesting film soundscapes.

Zimmer is one of my top favourite composers. I loved what he did in the 80s and 90s (his 90s stuff is what I feel the most connected to, personally), but also the 2000s and 2010s -- especially how he constantly renews himself and explores new soundscapes, refusing to be, say, the "power anthem" guy (as much as I love that particular sound).

When he first came onto the scene, I found his music to be diverse and interesting.
As he became a McDonald's-like juggernaut of a music factory, I not only DON'T KNOW what Hans Zimmer does, but I now question WHAT HE DID back then.
Everything became a little too murky for me.
Why does LOTS of The Lion King (his Oscar Winner) sound more like Mark Mancina? I could apply this thought to countless others.
That whole POTC/Klaus Badelt mess shrouds things further.
Yes, he gives credit, but the line has blurred so much now, I honestly don't think we'll ever know what a true, stand-alone Hans Zimmer composition is (or was).
He's obviously a great manager/producer, but I'm not quite sure how good a film composer he is.

Ask me what I think of Stanley Myers, Shirley Walker, Mark Mancina, John Powell... wink

For me, his golden period was from 1988 to 1996. The last 20 years he has been hit or miss, and I don't really buy much of his stuff anymore. And he's working way too much.

But I'm looking forward to see him live in Hamburg next year.

I think Zimmer's score for MAN OF STEEL is outstanding in every way. Otherwise I'm not a fan of his work though there have been things here and there that have caught my interest.

When it's good, it's really, really good. But when it's bad. . .

Sucks! Ruined the film score industry! Well okay I like his 80's and 90's stuff too.

I agree with "mastadge" that when he's good he's really good, but when he's bad, he's really bad. That said I do wish that most of his compositions were properly credited to who actually wrote them. Also I really only have been a fan since Hannibal, with Crimson Tide and Broken Arrow being his only previous scores that I like. Maybe it took his having other composers contributing music as the reason I now like his scores. Am I wrong that in the 80's and 90's he composed his own stuff?

That's pretty much how I feel. I like a lot of his early career drama and comedy scores. The more recent stuff usually does very little for me.

It's a trick question, right?

The only score of his that I am consciously aware of hearing was "Inception," when I saw the film. I thought the music was absolutely awful, both on its own and also in terms of how it interfered with the film. Truly terrible stuff.

And before anyone beats me up, I am responding to the question in the thread title.

Some might argue that the only thing worse than Zimmer's music is the hateful remarks directed at it by the likes of this board.

Prince of Egypt is a masterpiece.

I've long since learnt to shrug my shoulders at the dismissive remarks in reactionary places like this. Everyone's entitled to their opinions, but cheap shots are dime a dozen.

So if the board allows a question such as this to be posed in a thread title, doesn't it stand to reason that the question will elicit a range of responses?
