Here is just a random thought that as occurred to me.

Hey, it is only a few days until Thanksgiving. Keeping that in mind, I think it is rather obvious that some of our members have unbridled love and enthusiasm for certain composers. When one absolutely ADORES a specific composer, it is really hard not to want to share such adoration with our members. It is called a Magnificent Obsession. (MO) It is almost like we will burst if we contain or don’t share such MOs and perhaps enlighten our fellow score lovers about certain composers, and I’m okay with such sharing.

We all know Deputy Riley loves all things Beltrami. (And Hunger Games quadrulogy.)
Henry loves all things Conti.
bobbengan loves all things Scott.
Maleficio loves all things Delerue
Also some love all things Barry, or Tyler, or Desplat or Goldsmith or…

I’m pretty obsessive about Bernstein.

My motto is that if I don’t want to read a member’s next MO, I can skip it; however, overall I really enjoy reading members’ adulations. I find these idolizations to be contagions of the healthy kind. I enjoy being infected by the joys of others. Vive La Thanksgiving.

You sure about that, Joan? It seems to me what's really happening is we're OCD and not OMO! big grin

A. Newman, Rozsa, Poledouris, Bernstein, and Goldsmith for me. If I could afford it and if all their music existed outside the films I'd persue complete collections for every one of them. Probably a few others, too. I'd list Korngold but film music wasn't really the majority of his output, though I'd certainly buy all of his output if available.

I guess the only composer I'm truly obsessed with is John Williams. Since obsession is a somewhat loaded word, though, I prefer to use 'passion'. smile

Joan, nice idea for a thread, love the occasional beams of light around this dark and crabby board.

I've gotta say that your obsession with Elmer B. has been a reason for me to listen to his music more frequently. This is what I love about this board (when it happens) - taking people's enthusiasms as a reason to explore a composer or work I haven't paid much attention to, even if it is in my collection (lots of EB for example).

I am pretty obsessive about Goldsmith and Rozsa first and foremost, with Johnny Williams, Brucie Broughton, and Bernie Herrmann as strong seconds. But I find myself more obsessed with particular scores that are, for me, just about perfect. Things like:

Defending Your Life
The Stunt Man
The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean
Young Sherlock Holmes
The Empire Strikes Back
The Omen
Innerspace
The Italian Job (Powell)
To Kill a Mockingbird
The Return of the Pink Panther
Inception
And yes, I'm not ashamed to say Star Trek - pretty much the whole darn thing, from TOS to Into Darkness.

As I posted in a thread I made a couple of weeks ago, sometimes this is because I have strong associations with both the music and the movie, but whatever the reason I listen and listen and love and love.

Sean, if you are more "obsessed" or passionate about certain scores than composers, then great!
I am magnificently obsessed with To Kill A Mockingbird, The Magnificent Seven and others that I find to be joyful during every play. (I like "crabby board" too.)

OMO or OCD? Either. I do think that maybe the word "passion" has less negative connotations that "obsession." Magnificent Passions? I'm thankful either way and hope that members will continue to share their joys.

Joan, I heartily commend your idea in posting this thread and I totally agree with the sentiment. Nothing wrong with rampant positivity towards a composer (or artist, or anything) that you simply naturally feel little to no darkness towards. I like that you enjoy soaking this up from others, and I hope you're not the only one. I am like this too, and I have discovered some great stuff by following the breadcrumbs left by the positive ravings of those whose infectious glowing words have inspired me to investigate.

If my ranting and raving around here on topics that I'm passionate about such as The Hunger Games scores, Marco Beltrami, Friday the 13th Manfredini scores (and films), the unheralded brilliance of underrated JNH scores like The Lookout, Freedomland, The Interpreter, A Perfect Murder, Dreamcatcher, Powell's Bourne trilogy, Charlie Clouser's wonderfully rich Saw series of scores, etc...if my ranting and raving about such things entices just one person to investigate these works and gets them to fall in love with them, or become enraptured by them, or to simply enjoy them, or to become impressed by them, or to acknowledge them but pass the word on to a friend who they know would love them to death...well, that makes me very happy, because I love to spread the joy of great music and passion for enjoying art.

You go, Joan!

Thank you, Deputy. I feel the same. If just a few people become interested in a composer or a few scores due to the Joyful Ravings of some passionate fans, then theses efforts have meaning.

Hi Joan,
I've bought some great stuff since joining this board, for film score information it's second to none.
May the "Joyful Ravings" abound !

I don’t expect response to this old thread, but I resurrected it because of the constant arguments over Zimmer.

We are losing our "Joyful Ravings."

In various forms of art some people prefer Robert Frost over e e cumming and Andrew Wyeth over Picasso. Some like Bach more than Beethoven. So what? Different strokes.

My film score Magnificent Obsessions are still E Bernstein and Goldsmith. I think I should add John Williams to my obsession list. Other living composers I like are J N Howard, Silvestri, Velázquez and a few others.

I refuse to lose sleep at night because others don’t share my personal obsessions. Obviously, we have some members on this board whose Magnificent Obsessions include Zimmer. I like his power anthems but not his soundscapes. If he brings JOY to others, I’m okay and so are they.

We as individuals don’t always respect each other’s film score choices, but NO extended arguments will change our individual tastes. We can debate a score as to its fitness or appropriateness in a movie. Some think a score works and other don’t agree. State why and then move on. Personal preferences won’t change. Share our Joy, and if others don't like them, best to journey on and pursue our own film score joy.

The resurrection is much-appreciated!

John Williams was definitely an obsession as was John Barry at a young age, though now it is more a scholarly and emotional love.

I am currently VERY obsessed with the soundtrack to THE FIFTH ELEMENT though because I just watched the movie again for the first time in a while. The movie is extremely joyful as is the music as well. It’s not perfect music from Serra, but the score has possibly be most genres crammed into one film and it’s so full of life and energy that is has re-captured my imagination again!

During the late seventies and entire eighties decade I was obsessed with Goldsmith and Williams. Both were just cranking out spectacular scores year after year to many of my favorite films. I only have about 140 soundtracks in my modest collection but half of them are by those two composers. They could do no wrong in my eyes (or is it ears?).

Thanks JTP and Adam for your responses. I now want to revisit The Fifth Element which I haven't viewed in a long time. I don't think I paid attention to the music when I first watched it. Duh on me.

And of course, I'm a big fan of Williams, Goldsmith and Barry.

Joan, don't get on here too often but I'll throw my 2 old cents in - and looking at the old posts, I'll echo what Thor said years ago: I'll go with "passion" over "obsession", lol. But for me, it's always been John Williams. I got pulled into that sphere with Star Wars back in 1977, as did so many others, but slowly began to collect every score of his I could find and still have every release (so far, including some unmentionables). I still remember trading cassettes of unreleased stuff with other collectors back in the 80s and 90s before the floodgates of expanded releases opened up, lol.

Hey, passion does make more sense than obsession. Thanks for the reminder. In the early 70's, I saw the TV movie Jane Eyre with George C. Scott. No internet then. I just HAD to have the Lp of that gorgeous Williams score. Took a lot of snail mail letters to track it down. That started my "passion" for Williams.

joan hue: My film score Magnificent Obsessions are still E Bernstein and Goldsmith.

Then you should absolutely have the recent issues of Stripes from La-La Land and Legend from Music Box Records, if you don't already.

Hey BornOfAJackal, always nice to hear from you.

Legend doesn't do a lot for me. I don't play my old copy very often; however, LOVE Stripes. What a rocking score. Also, I love my other Goldsmith scores.
